NY unemployment ended - will child tax credit payments continue?
Just finished my NY unemployment benefits last week. I've been getting some kind of child credit payment - about $250 a month for my kids for the past 2 months. Will these payments keep coming even though my unemployment is over? I cant remember what its even called exactly but its been helping alot with groceries and stuff. Anyone know if these are related to unemployment or separate?

Those sound like the Advanced Child Tax Credit payments, which are completely separate from unemployment benefits. They're administered by the IRS, not NYSDOL. You should continue receiving them if you qualified based on your tax return, regardless of your unemployment status. You can check the status of your payments on the IRS portal.

I think what you're getting is the Advanced Child Tax Credit payments from the American Rescue Plan. If I'm correct, as long as you have eligible children and meet the income requirements, you should keep getting them whether you're on unemployment or not. But I'm NOT 100% sure about this so maybe double check with the IRS?

•You're right. I went thru this last year - the child tax credit has NOTHING to do with unemployment. Two completely different programs!

The Child Tax Credit and unemployment are completely separate programs. The monthly payments you're receiving are an advance on your annual Child Tax Credit, which is based on your tax filing status and how many eligible children you have. Unemployment ending won't affect this at all! However, these advance payments are scheduled to end in December 2025 unless Congress extends them. You'll still get the remaining portion of your credit when you file your 2025 taxes next year.

•Thanks so much! I was so confused. So they will keep coming for a few more months at least. That's a relief!

Just to add some important information: if your income situation changed significantly this year compared to your last tax return, you might want to update your information on the IRS Child Tax Credit Update Portal. This could affect your eligibility or payment amounts. Also, keep in mind that these advance payments are only for half the total credit amount. You'll claim the other half when you file your 2025 tax return.

•Where do I update my info? I can't find this portal thing.

•You can find it on the IRS website at www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/child-tax-credit-update-portal. You'll need to create an ID.me account if you don't already have one.

I went through the exact same confusion last month! My NY unemployment benefits ended and I was panicking about losing the child credit payments too. Called the NYSDOL and waited on hold for like 2 hours just to be told they have nothing to do with it! So frustrating trying to get through to anyone who can actually help. I finally gave up and tried calling the IRS directly about my Child Tax Credit questions, but it was IMPOSSIBLE to reach an actual person. After trying for days, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to someone at the IRS. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE But yeah, bottom line - your child tax credit payments will continue regardless of unemployment status. They're completely separate.

•Thanks for the tip! I've been trying to call the IRS about some other tax stuff too and it's been impossible. I'll check out that service.

•I tried calling the IRS 14 times last month about my child tax credit payments that suddenly stopped. Couldn't get through to ANYONE. Does this Claimyr thing really work? Seems kinda sketchy that you have to pay to talk to the government lol

Kinda related question - my unemployment just ended yesterday and I'm worried about my health insurance too. Does anyone know if Medicaid automatically ends when unemployment does? I got approved for both around the same time so not sure if they're connected.

•Medicaid and unemployment are separate programs too. You won't automatically lose Medicaid when unemployment ends, but your income changes might affect your eligibility. You should contact your local Medicaid office to report your change in circumstances. They'll determine if you still qualify or need to transition to another healthcare option.

Update: I just checked my bank account and the child tax credit payment came through today! So it definitely continues after unemployment ends. Thanks everyone for the help!
