Is NY unemployment offering a new stimulus payment in 2025? Confused about eligibility
I'm hearing mixed things about a possible new stimulus payment for NY unemployment recipients. Someone at work said there's a new payment coming but only for people with kids? I'm currently on regular UI benefits and trying to figure out if I qualify for any additional money. Has anyone received any notification about this from NY DOL? The website doesn't seem to have any clear info about it.

There's no new 'stimulus' specifically for NY unemployment recipients. What your coworker might be referring to is the expanded NY Child Tax Credit that was announced for the 2025 tax year. That's for families with children and is based on your tax filing status, not directly related to unemployment benefits. What IS happening is that NY DOL is processing some retroactive payments for people whose claims were delayed earlier this year during the system upgrade. Those aren't stimulus payments though - just backpay for benefits people were already entitled to.

•Thanks for clarifying! So there's nothing special I need to apply for if I don't have kids? The news keeps using the word 'stimulus' so I got confused.

•Yeah, totally different program. Child tax credits have nothing to do with unemployment. Don't waste your time looking for it on the DOL website.

I WISH there was a new stimulus!!! The DOL system is such a mess right now I can barely get my regular payments. Been waiting 6 weeks for them to fix an "eligibility issue" on my account that THEY caused during the system migration!! Can't even get through on the phone to talk to anyone!!!

•If you're struggling to get through on the phone lines, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was stuck in a similar situation last month and couldn't get through to an agent for weeks. Claimyr got me connected to a live agent in about 25 minutes. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - it basically holds your place in line so you don't have to keep redialing. Helped me resolve my backpay issue pretty quickly once I actually got to speak with someone.

I acutally just got off the phone with DOL yesterday about my claim and asked about this. The rep told me there is NO new stimulus program for unemployment recipients. She said they've been getting a ton of calls about this because of some viral social media posts that are spreading misinformation. The only "extra" payments happening right now are: 1. Backpay for delayed claims from the February system upgrade 2. Retroactive adjustments for people who had incorrect benefit calculations Neither of these are new stimulus programs - they're just corrections to existing benefits that were incorrectly processed.

•How did you even get through to them?? I've been calling for DAYS and just get disconnected! Did you call at a specific time or something?

•I called right when they opened at 8am on Tuesday. Still had to wait about 45 minutes though.

This is why I hate election years... there's always rumors about free money coming that never materializes. Don't hold your breath waiting for any extra cash from unemployment!

Is there any way to check if I might be eligible for one of those retroactive adjustments that @UserSage145 mentioned? My benefit amount seemed lower than I expected based on my previous income.

•Log into your NY.gov account and check your payment history. If there was an adjustment, you'd see a separate payment labeled "Retroactive Adjustment" or "Benefit Recalculation." You can also check your Message Center for any notices about recalculations. If you think your weekly benefit amount is incorrect based on your earnings, you can request a review by submitting form TC403ER through your online account. You'll need to provide wage documentation showing your earnings during the base period.

•That's not correct. There is no extension program currently active for people who've exhausted their regular UI benefits. The maximum is still 26 weeks in New York State. Extended benefits programs like those during the pandemic haven't been reauthorized.

So frustrating!!! I got excited when I heard about this from my neighbor. I'm barely making ends meet with the current benefit amount, I was hoping there was some extra help coming. Why would they spread fake news about this? Got my hopes up for nothing!

•EXACTLY!!! They need to do SOMETHING to help people. The cost of everything is insane now! How are we supposed to survive on these tiny unemployment checks??

Just to be 100% clear for everyone in this thread: • There is NO new stimulus payment for unemployment recipients • The NY Child Tax Credit is for tax filers with dependent children • Some UI recipients may receive retroactive payments if their claims were incorrectly calculated • Regular UI benefits in NY still have a maximum duration of 26 weeks • The maximum weekly benefit amount remains $594 for 2025 If you're struggling to reach someone at DOL to resolve issues with your existing claim, consider using a service like Claimyr to get through the phone lines. I've recommended it to several people who were stuck in claim limbo.

•Thanks for the clear breakdown! This makes a lot more sense now. I'll stop looking for news about a stimulus payment.
