NY unemployment direct deposit change impossible - can't access ID.me account

I'm having a nightmare trying to change my direct deposit info with ny unemployment. My bank account got compromised last week so I had to close it and open a new one. Now I need to update my payment method but the system requires me to verify through ID.me first. Problem is, I used an old email address when I set up ID.me months ago and I can't remember which one it was. I've tried all 4 of my emails with password reset but none work. Called the unemployment office 17 times over 3 days but can never get through to a human. The automated system just tells me to go online! Meanwhile my payment from Tuesday probably went to my closed account and I'm freaking out because rent is due next week. Has anyone dealt with this? Is there any way to bypass the ID.me verification or talk to someone who can manually update my direct deposit info?

You gotta create a new ID.me account with your current email. Then contact ID.me support to merge the accounts. I went through similar headache in September when I forgot which email I used. Took about a week to sort out but eventually worked.

Did you have to contact unemployment after merging the accounts? Or did it automatically connect to your unemployment account?

Had to call unemployment after. It was a pain in the a$$ to get through but worth it. My benefits were on hold until I got it fixed.

This didn't work for me. They said I couldn't have two accounts with the same SSN. Did they change the policy?

Maybe they changed something? This was back in sept tho so idk the current rules. The ID.me support was actually helpful unlike DOL 🙄

After going in circles with ny unemployment for weeks trying to change my banking info, I finally found a service called claimyr.com that got me connected to an actual human on the phone! After using it, a live agent called me back and fixed my direct deposit issue in like 10 minutes. Seriously talking to an agent got my payment method updated so fast after wasting days trying to figure it out myself. Check out this video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this for real? Seems too good to be true. I've been trying to reach someone for 3 weeks straight 😫

100% worked for me! It was the only way I could finally talk to someone after calling 30+ times myself. They basically wait on hold for you then connect you when a real person picks up.

another day another scam lmao 🤡 how much they paying you to post this?

0 coins

Not a scam at all. I was desperate after my bank account got hacked and needed to update my info ASAP. It was worth every penny to get my benefits going to the right account. claimyr.com seriously saved me from missing rent.

wait so this actually works? the ny unemployment phone system is literal hell. might try this tomorrow cuz I've wasted like 8 hours on hold this week already

0 coins

Yep! I was skeptical too but it actually connected me to a real person who fixed my direct deposit issue. The agent I spoke to was actually super helpful once I finally got through.

The ID.me stuff is a nightmare. My sister had the same problem and ended up having to make an in-person appointment at the local DOL office. Took 3 weeks to get an appointment but they were able to manually update her banking info without needing the ID.me verification. Might be worth trying if you're near a physical office.

OMG this EXACT thing happened to me in March! Someone hacked my checking account and I had to get a new one. The unemployment system is literally the worst. What worked for me was calling RIGHT when they open at 8am - I got through after only 45 mins on hold that way. Any other time of day was impossible.

I tried the 8am trick for two weeks straight and never got through 😭 I think everyone knows about that trick now

Ugh that sucks. It worked for me but maybe I just got lucky that day. The whole system is such trash.

I'll try the 8am thing tomorrow. Did they need any special documentation when you changed your account info?

0 coins

They asked for my ID and the last 4 digits of my old account plus the full info for my new account. Pretty simple once I actually talked to someone.

Check your junk mail and search your email for "ID.me" - sometimes their emails end up filtered. Also try calling ID.me directly at 866-775-4363. Their customer service actually answers! Unlike NY unemployment lol

Good idea! I just checked all my spam folders but nothing there. I'll try calling ID.me directly tomorrow.

Have you tried going through the state representatives office? My cousin was having a similar issue and after months of trying to handle it himself, he contacted his state assembly member. Their office has special contacts at unemployment and got everything fixed within a week. Worth a shot since youre desperate!

This same thing happened to me last year and I almost got evicted because of it. The NY unemployment system is BROKEN. What worked for me was tweeting at NYSDOL with my issue (don't include personal info). They actually responded and had someone call me within 48 hours. Worth a try if you're on Twitter.

Social media shaming is literally the only way to get government agencies to do their jobs anymore 🙄

Here's what you need to do to fix this - I work in IT and help people with this kinda stuff: 1. First, try the ID.me account recovery at recover.id.me - they have options if you can't access your email 2. If that doesn't work, you CAN get through to unemployment but you need to be strategic. Call 888-209-8124, then press 1 for English, then 2 for existing claim, then 2 again for payment methods, then 9 to speak with an agent. DON'T call Monday/Tuesday as those are the busiest days. 3. If you still can't get through, use a service like claimyr.com that will wait on hold for you and call when an agent is on the line. It's worth it when you're dealing with a direct deposit issue because time is money. 4. While waiting for this to resolve, call your old bank and ask them to reject any incoming deposits from NYSDOL so they get returned. That way they'll have to issue you a paper check eventually. 5. Document EVERYTHING in case you need to file a complaint later. I've helped dozens of people navigate these issues - getting a real person on the phone is absolutely the fastest way to fix banking info problems. Good luck!

That tip about calling the old bank to reject deposits is smart AF 💯

No problem! Let us know what works. The system is designed to be frustrating but there's always a way through!

The ID.me thing is literally the worst invention ever. I got locked out for 3 months because of facial recognition issues (I have vitiligo). The whole NY unemployment system is a dumpster fire. Honestly best of luck to you.

you can try sending a message through the secure messaging portal on the unemployment website. sometimes they actually respond to those and can help with direct deposit changes. clickk on 'messages' then 'compose new' and select 'payment method' as the subject. worth a shot while ur trying other methods

I tried that already but just got an automated response saying I need to update it through my online account 😑 it's a horrible loop

ugh thats so typical. the system is designed to make us give up i swear

As someone who works in banking, CALL YOUR OLD BANK IMMEDIATELY if you haven't already! Even though the account is closed, sometimes payments can still go through and then get returned. The bank might be able to intercept the deposit and redirect it. Worth trying while you sort out the unemployment mess.

I called them but they said once the account is closed they can't do anything. They said if a deposit comes in it'll automatically be returned to sender after 5 business days 😕

At least the money will go back to unemployment then, and they'll eventually have to issue you a paper check. Not ideal but better than the money vanishing!

Did you try making a completely new ID.me account? Sometimes it's easier to start fresh than recover an old one. Just use your current email.

They won't let you make multiple accounts with the same SSN. Tried this when I had a similar issue. The system is designed to trap you lol

That sucks, didn't know that! The whole system is rigged against users I swear

Try the Facebook method! NY unemployment actually responds to messages on their official Facebook page. Send them a DM explaining your situation (no personal info) and ask them to have someone call you. Worked for my roommate last year when she had payment issues.

Honestly I gave up on phone calls and went straight to my state senator's office. They have unemployment liaisons who can cut through the BS. Google your NY state senator, most have a form on their website specifically for unemployment issues. They got back to me in 2 days and had my issue fixed in a week.

this this THIS 👆 legislative offices are the secret back door to all gov services. they have special contacts normal people don't

That's a great idea! Do they need any specific information to help?

Just your name, contact info, claim number if you have it, and a clear explanation of your problem. They'll reach out when they submit the inquiry to DOL.

Hate to be that person, but did you try all the variations of your email? Like if you normally use name@gmail.com, try n.ame@gmail.com or na.me@gmail.com - gmail ignores dots in addresses but some systems register them as different emails. Worth a shot!

When you filed your claim originally, did you set up direct deposit then or was it added later? If it was later you might be able to use the paper check option as a fallback. Still have to talk to someone but sometimes the paper check option has a different verification process. Just thinking outside the box here cause I've been through this circus.

I set it up when I first filed. Is there a way to switch to paper checks without ID.me verification?

In my experience you still need to verify identity but sometimes they have alternative methods if you explain you can't access ID.me. Worth asking about when you get someone on the phone.
