NY unemployment back pay after first payment - how long for DocuSign?
Just got my first NY unemployment payment (scheduled for Monday) but it's only for one week! The agent told me I need to wait for a DocuSign email to claim the other 6 weeks of back pay I'm owed. Has anyone gone through this process? How long after your first payment did the DocuSign actually come through? I'm getting anxious since I've been waiting almost 2 months already and really need those back payments to catch up on bills.

•That's not too bad. Did they send the DocuSign to your email on file or did it show up somewhere in your unemployment account?

I had to wait THREE WEEKS after my first payment before I got that stupid DocuSign email!!! And then another week for the money to actually hit my account. The system is BROKEN. They expect us to survive without income for months and then make us jump through hoops to get what we're owed. It's criminal!!

•Three weeks?! Ugh, I was hoping it would be faster. Did calling them help speed anything up?

The DocuSign process is part of their identity verification and back payment authorization protocol. Typically, you should receive the DocuSign email within 5-10 business days after your first payment processes. Make sure to check your spam/junk folders daily, as these emails sometimes get filtered. The email will come from a NY.gov domain and will contain specific instructions for completing the back pay certification. You'll need to verify your identity and certify for each week individually. If you don't receive anything after 10 business days, I recommend contacting them directly. The back payments usually process within 3-5 business days after DocuSign completion, assuming there are no other issues with your claim.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll keep an eye on my spam folder too - didn't think of that.

I went through this exact situation in January. For me, the DocuSign came 7 days after my first payment posted. But here's what I learned the hard way: they send it at weird hours (mine came at 11:30pm), and it expires after 48 hours! So check your email constantly and complete it immediately when it arrives. Also, when filling it out, make sure your certification answers match exactly what you put on your original weekly certifications or they'll flag your account for review. I had a friend who got delayed another month because he accidentally put different info.

•Oh wow, good to know about the expiration! I'll set up email notifications on my phone so I don't miss it. Did you have to upload any documents with your DocuSign or just fill out forms?

my neighbor got his backpay without any docusign at all, just showed up in his account one day. wonder why some people need it and others dont??

•It depends on several factors - how many weeks you're claiming, whether there were any identity verification flags on your account, and sometimes it's just random. The NYSDOL system isn't exactly consistent.

I waited 3 weeks for my DocuSign but realized I'd been checking the wrong email address the whole time! Make sure they have your correct email on file in your NY.gov account. When I called to update it, I found out they'd been sending it to my old address that I don't use anymore. I was losing my mind trying to reach someone at unemployment to fix this. Spent days hitting redial with no success. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an agent within 20 minutes instead of spending days trying. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE After updating my email, I got the DocuSign the next day and my back pay hit my account 4 days later. Such a relief after all that stress!

•I've been considering using something like that. Their phone system is impossible! Did you have to talk to a specific department or just the general helpline?

•Just the general helpline. Once I got through, they transferred me to the right department handling DocuSign issues. The agent could see all the failed email attempts in their system. Definitely worth it instead of wasting days trying to call.

Has anyone had their DocuSign get lost or never arrive at all? I'm worried since my email has been acting up lately. Is there any way to request they resend it if it doesn't come through?

•Yes, if you don't receive the DocuSign within the expected timeframe, you can call and request they resend it. When you reach an agent, ask specifically for the "back pay certification DocuSign to be regenerated." They can reset the system to send a new one. Also, make sure to whitelist ny.gov domains in your email settings.

I'm convinced they deliberately delay these DocuSign emails to avoid paying us what they owe! My friend in Buffalo got hers right away, but everyone I know in NYC had to wait weeks. It's like they're playing games with our money while we can't pay rent! The whole system is designed to make us give up.

•my cousin works for the state (not unemployment) and he says its just that they're super understaffed still since 2020. not a conspiracy, just incompetence lol

Update from my experience: After you complete the DocuSign, you'll get a confirmation email. Keep this as proof! I had to reference mine when following up about my back pay. Also, when the back payments do process, they might come in separate batches rather than all at once. For me, 3 weeks came in the first payment, then the other 4 weeks came two days later. Don't panic if you only see partial payment at first. The payment release date shown in your payment history might also be different from when it actually hits your bank account or debit card, usually 1-2 business days later.

•Thank you! This is really helpful. Did you notice if weekends affected the timing at all? Wonder if I should be counting business days only.

•Definitely count business days only. The DocuSign processing seems to completely pause on weekends. And if a holiday comes up (like Memorial Day is coming), expect additional delays.
