NY unemployment 1099-G tax form showing duplicate income from wrong year - what to do?
My son just received his 1099-G form for his 2025 NY unemployment benefits, but it's showing the EXACT same amount as his 2024 form! Everything is identical - same dollar amount, same withholding. Has this happened to anyone else? He already emailed the NY DOL through his online account about a week ago but hasn't heard anything back. Tax deadline is coming up and we're not sure what to report to the IRS. I'm worried about him getting audited if the numbers don't match up with what the state reported. Any ideas on how to get this fixed quickly?

This happened to me too! The 1099-G for 2025 was exactly the same as my 2024 form. I called them (took forever to get through) and they told me it was a system error that affected "multiple claimants" and they're working on issuing corrected forms. But they couldn't tell me when the new forms would be sent out. The rep suggested I wait for the corrected form before filing my taxes, but if you're up against the deadline, you can request a filing extension.

•Thanks for letting me know! Did they at least confirm what the correct amount should be? I'm wondering if my son should just file with last year's numbers and then do an amended return later when they fix it.

This is actually a pretty serious issue that's affecting thousands of NY unemployment recipients this year. The DOL had a database migration error that caused 2024 data to be duplicated for some 2025 forms. Here's what you need to do: 1. Keep a record of your attempt to contact them by email (date, time, etc) 2. Call the dedicated 1099-G correction line at 888-209-8124, press 2 for tax forms 3. Request a corrected 1099-G form specifically 4. Document the call reference number they give you 5. If you can't get through, file IRS Form 4868 for a tax extension DON'T file taxes with incorrect information. The IRS will get the erroneous data from NY DOL and it will trigger an automatic discrepancy flag.

•Thank you so much for the detailed steps! My son has been trying to call that number all week but can never get through - just constant busy signals or it hangs up after he waits on hold. Is there a better time of day to call?

•That's absolutely the worst thing you can do. Your cousin is setting himself up for penalties, interest charges, and potentially an audit. The IRS automatically matches 1099-G forms with tax returns, and discrepancies get flagged. Please advise him to file an amended return ASAP.

I waited on hold for THREE HOURS yesterday trying to get someone on the phone about this exact issue!! Then the call dropped!!! This is RIDICULOUS!!! Why can't they just FIX THEIR MISTAKE instead of making us waste our time calling?? How is this our problem to fix?? I'm so DONE with NYSDOL and their incompetence!!!

•I had the same frustrating experience trying to get through about my 1099-G issue. After multiple failed attempts, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get a callback from an agent within 30 minutes. Saved me hours of redial hell. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent confirmed they're aware of the duplicate 1099-G problem and are issuing corrected forms. They put a note in my account to expedite mine and I received the corrected form in my online message center 3 days later.

•That's a good idea! I'll have him check his online account right now. He's only been looking for an email response.

I'm going through this nightmare right now too! I received the wrong 1099-G showing my 2024 benefits amount instead of 2025. I'm panicking because I already filed my taxes with the incorrect amount before realizing the error. Now I'm worried about getting hit with penalties or an audit. Has anyone here had to file an amended return because of the DOL's mistake? Is there a special process to follow? Should I wait until I receive the corrected form first?

•Yes, you should file an amended return (Form 1040-X) as soon as you receive the corrected 1099-G. You won't face penalties if you amend before the IRS contacts you about the discrepancy. While waiting for the corrected form, call the DOL, document the conversation details, and ask for an estimated timeframe. This documentation will help if you need to explain the delay to the IRS.

maybe its right? did ur son get the exact same amount both years?

•No, definitely not. He only received benefits for about 6 weeks in 2025 compared to almost 5 months in 2024. The amounts should be completely different.

After reading through this thread, I wanted to share what worked for me with the duplicate 1099-G issue. I initially tried emailing and calling for two weeks with no success. Finally used Claimyr to get a callback from NYSDOL (saved me hours of redial attempts). The agent explained they had a system error during the 1099-G generation process that duplicated prior year data. They've identified all affected accounts and are issuing corrected forms. The agent placed a priority flag on my account, and I received the corrected form in my online message center within 72 hours. For those struggling to reach someone by phone, I highly recommend checking out their service. The video demo shows exactly how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Thank you for sharing this! I'll have my son try Claimyr since he's had zero luck getting through by phone. It's frustrating that we have to use a separate service just to reach a government agency, but at this point we just need this resolved before tax day.

•Which office did your brother go to? I didn't even know you could handle 1099-G issues in person! Did he need an appointment or just walk in?

Update for anyone still dealing with this: I finally received my corrected 1099-G form today. It came through my online message center, not by mail. It had a cover letter apologizing for the error and explaining that it was caused by a "data processing anomaly during the annual tax form generation process." So keep checking your online accounts!

•Thanks for the update! My son used that Claimyr service yesterday after nothing else worked. Got a callback within 20 minutes and they confirmed they'd send a corrected form. Said to check the message center in 3-5 business days. At least now we know what's happening!
