< Back to New York Unemployment

My family member's NY unemployment expires Sunday - what questions will they ask when reapplying?

My cousin's claim is set to expire on 10/23/22 which falls on a Sunday. The unemployment office told her she needs to call them to file a new claim on 10/25/22. Does anyone know what questions they'll be asking? Everything about her employment situation has remained exactly the same since April of last year. I'm trying to help her prepare since she gets really anxious with these types of calls. Also, is there any way to do this online instead of calling, or is calling the only option?

They'll ask about her employment history for the 18 months before she first filed, whether she's worked since then, any other income sources, etc. Basically the same stuff as the first time. Tell her not to worry too much - they just need to confirm nothing has changed. One tip though, make sure she has her W2s and pay stubs ready just in case.

Thanks! I'll let her know. She's got all her paperwork organized, she's just worried they'll ask something she won't know how to answer. Appreciate the help!

they also might ask if shes been looking for work and to provide names of places she applied to. thats what they asked me last month when i had to refile

Oh that's good to know. I'll tell her to keep track of her job search. She's been applying but probably hasn't kept detailed records.

After trying for 3 weeks to reach someone on the phone (literally 100+ calls), I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to a real person at ny unemployment. It basically waits on hold for you and then calls your phone when an agent picks up. Talking to an agent got my benefits flowing again within days. Best decision I made throughout this whole unemployment nightmare. Check it out: claimyr.com - there's also a YouTube video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

hmm sounds sus... did it actually work? I've been trying to get through for 2 weeks now 😩

I totally get the skepticism! But yeah, it worked for me. Got connected to an agent within like 2 hours. After wasting days trying to get through myself, it was such a relief. My backpay got processed the next day.

another day another scam 🙄 does this actually work or just another way to prey on desperate people?

Not a scam at all. It literally just holds your place in line and calls you when a real person picks up. Saved me so much stress and got my issues fixed. I was about to give up completely before trying it.

Can confirm this works - I used it last week after spending DAYS trying to get through. Had my issue resolved in one call.

I just went through this last month. The questions are pretty basic. They'll verify her identity, ask if she's worked since her initial claim, and check if she's been actively looking for work. They might ask for some details about her job search - so tell her to keep track of where she's applied.

I refiled a few weeks ago. The call took about 20 minutes. They asked if I had worked since my initial claim (I hadn't), verified my identity with some basic questions (address, last employer, etc.), and asked about my job search efforts. Make sure she has her ID ready and knows her previous employer's info. They might also ask why she's still unemployed.

Thank you! This is really helpful. Did they ask for specific dates when you applied to jobs?

They did ask for some recent examples of places I applied to - not super detailed but I gave them 3 examples with approximate dates. Just have her keep a basic list of where/when she's applied.

thE WORST part isnt the questions but getting someone on the phone lol. I spent 6 days calling and never got through. ended up finding someone on twitter who recommended a service that calls for you and transfers when they get someone (I think it was claimyr or something). otherwise u might as well start calling now for that 10/25 appointment 🤣

Ugh that's what I was afraid of. Did you end up using that service? How much did it cost?

yeah I did use it, don't remember exactly what I paid but it was worth EVERY penny to not spend another week calling hundreds of times. Got my issues fixed in one call after getting through.

The system is so frustrating...I spent 2 weeks calling every day trying to get through. Finally talked to someone last Friday after using claimyr.com (it calls and waits on hold then connects you when a person answers). They'll check if she qualifies for a new benefit year or if she should continue with extended benefits. Have her make sure she has these ready: - Social security number - ID - Employment records from the last 18 months - Record of job search activities - Details about her most recent employer The questions aren't hard, but getting through to ask them is the real challenge!

For me it was about 3 hours total - but I didn't have to sit on hold that whole time. The service called me when an agent picked up. Way better than what I was doing before (calling 50+ times a day and never getting through).

my benefits expired last month. when i called they mostly wanted to know: 1. if i worked at all since my initial claim 2. why im still unemployed 3. what jobs ive applied for recently 4. if my contact info is still the same nothing too complicated but fyi the hold times are INSANE. took me 4 days of calling to get through. the first 3 days i couldn't even get in the queue 🤮

wait I thought benefits all ended in September? how are people still collecting?

The federal pandemic programs ended, but regular NY unemployment still exists! You can get up to 26 weeks of regular benefits if you qualify.

I went through similar hell trying to reach them. Finally used claimyr.com after my friend recommended it. Got through in one try after literally hundreds of failed calls on my own.

Some advice so you avoid wasting time like I did: when your cousin calls, she should pick the option for "existing claim with questions" NOT "file a new claim" in the phone menu. I made that mistake and got routed to the wrong department who couldn't help me. Wasted 2 hours on hold just to be told to call back and select the other option 😤

Thanks for the tip! I'll make sure she knows which option to select.

Your cousin may not even need to call. I was in the same situation (claim expired in August) and I just certified as usual the following week and the system automatically processed my extension. Only had to call because there was a random issue with my ID verification.

Really? That would be great if she doesn't have to call. Did you get any notification about the automatic extension?

I got an email about a week after I certified saying my extension was processed. But from what I've seen in other posts, it seems to vary person to person. Some people got automatically extended, others had to call.

This is BAD advice - I tried this and my payments stopped for 6 weeks while they sorted it out. DEFINITELY call on the date they tell you to call.

If she literally can't get through (which is likely), I've heard good things about claimyr.com - it's a service that waits on hold and then calls you when a real person answers. I haven't used it personally, but several people in my FB unemployment group swear by it. Might be worth looking into if she gets stuck in phone hell.

I used it last week after spending 3 days failing to get through. Worth every penny! Got my backpay issue resolved in one call.

I just went thru this hell. They ask all the same questions from the original application. Make sure she knows: - exact dates of her last employment - employer address and phone - reason for unemployment - what job search activities she's done And the MOST IMPORTANT thing: don't give up if the line disconnects! It took me 27 calls over 3 days to finally get through. The system is a nightmare right now.

The NY unemployment system is such a joke. I spent a total of 19 hours over 3 days trying to speak to someone for my benefit extension. Eventually I caved and used a service called Claimyr that basically waits on hold for you. Got through in about 2 hours and fixed my issue. The system is deliberately broken to discourage people from collecting what they're entitled to. Keep pushing and don't give up.

I've seen a few people mention Claimyr now. I'll definitely look into it if she has trouble getting through. Thanks for the suggestion!
