NY unemployment claim expires Sunday - what questions for renewal call on Tuesday?
My sister's NY unemployment claim expires on 8/14/2025 (Sunday) and the NYSDOL told her she needs to call them on 8/16/2025 (Tuesday) to file a new claim. She's really nervous about the call because she hates talking on the phone. Does anyone know what questions they'll ask her? Everything about her situation has stayed exactly the same since March when she first filed. Will they make her go through the whole application again? She just wants to be prepared for the call.

When I had to renew my claim last month, they basically just verified all my information was still correct. They asked: - Personal info (address, phone, etc) - Employment status (still unemployed) - If I've worked at all since my last claim - If I've been looking for work (have documentation ready!) - Direct deposit info It took about 15 minutes. Just make sure she has her Social Security number and NY.gov ID ready. They'll probably schedule her for another phone appointment to complete the process.

Thank you SO much! I'll let her know. Did they ask about her previous employer at all or was it mostly just confirming her current status?

Not my experience AT ALL. I was on hold for THREE HOURS last month for my renewal and then they asked me a million questions about my work search efforts. The system is completely BROKEN. They treat us like we're trying to scam them when we just need our benefits!!

They're going to verify all her personal information, employment history, and reason for unemployment. The most important thing is to have documentation of her work search activities - they WILL ask about this in detail, and inadequate work search is the #1 reason claims get rejected during renewal. Make sure she has applied to at least 3 jobs per week and documented everything (where she applied, position, date, contact method, etc). They might also ask about any income she's earned since her last certification.

Oh no, she's been applying to jobs but I'm not sure she's been keeping detailed records. Is that going to be a problem? How strict are they about the documentation?

When I had to do this in January, I was so nervous too! But it wasn't bad. They just went through the same questions as when I first applied but WAY faster because nothing had changed. Tell her to just say "same as before" for most questions and they'll move along. Good luck to your sister!

That's reassuring, thank you! She's a really anxious person so hearing that it might not be too intense helps.

I actually had to do this exact process last week. Here's what happened: 1. The call took about 25 minutes total 2. They verified my identity (SSN, DOB, address) 3. Confirmed my employment history (last employer, separation reason) 4. Asked about any work or income since last certification 5. Verified my work search activities (3 per week minimum) 6. Checked if I'd refused any job offers 7. Updated my payment preferences The most important part is the work search documentation. If your sister hasn't been keeping good records, tell her to reconstruct as much as she can before the call. They might ask for specific details. Also, be prepared for a LONG wait time. I was on hold for over 2 hours before speaking to someone. If she has trouble getting through, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected with an agent in about 20 minutes instead of hours on hold. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - totally worth it to avoid the endless hold music!

Thank you for the detailed breakdown! She's definitely been stressing about the hold times. I'll check out that service you mentioned - anything to make this easier for her. Did they ask for really specific details about her work search like contact names or just the basic company info?

@concerned_sibling They asked for company names, positions applied for, dates, and method of application (online, in person, etc). They didn't ask for contact names in my case, but it's good to have that info just in case. The agent was pretty understanding that some details might be missing, but definitely have the basics for each job application ready.

I got asked diff questions each time I call. Seem like it depends who u get. Some agents chill, others super strict.

This WHOLE PROCESS is designed to be difficult on purpose!!! My claim expired in June and when I called they gave me the runaround for WEEKS. First they said I needed to file online, then they said I had to call, then they said my work search wasn't enough even though I've applied to over 100 jobs!!! The system is BROKEN and they don't care about us at all!!!! Tell your sister to record the call so they can't backtrack on what they say. And be ready to spend HOURS on hold only to be disconnected. This is the reality of NYSDOL in 2025.

Oh no, that sounds awful! I'm sorry you had such a terrible experience. I hope hers goes better. Did you ever get it resolved?

One important thing I forgot to mention - make sure your sister knows the exact date she started working at her last job and the exact date she stopped working. They'll verify this information against their records, and if there's a discrepancy, it can delay the whole process.

When I had to renew my claim back in March, they also asked me if I had received any severance pay or vacation payout from my last employer. My situation was a bit different though because I had been working part-time for a while before getting laid off again. But yeah, the job search documentation is super important! I actually missed a week of benefits because I couldn't prove I'd been looking for work one week when I was sick.

That's a good point about severance/vacation payouts. They use that to calculate if you have any offset weeks where you wouldn't receive benefits even though you're eligible for a new claim period.

Update: So did your sister make the call yet? What happened? I'm curious because my brother has to do the same thing next month and I want to prepare him.

She just finished the call! It went WAY better than she expected. Took about 30 minutes total. They mostly just confirmed her information was the same and verified her work search activities (thank you all for the heads up on that - she spent yesterday putting together her records). They told her she'll receive her first payment on the new claim within 7-10 days. Really appreciate everyone's advice here!
