Mother's maiden name verification issue with NY unemployment - now I'm locked out!

So frustrated with the identity verification for my ny unemployment claim. I finally made it through all the steps on the website after being laid off from my sales position in August. Got to the security questions and apparently entered my mother's maiden name 'wrong' three times. I KNOW her maiden name - I've been using it for security questions my entire life! Now I'm completely locked out of my account and can't access any benefits. It's been 5 weeks without income now and I've got bills stacking up. Called the helpline dozens of times but just get an automated message saying 'high call volume' and it hangs up! Anyone else deal with this ridiculous ID verification process? How am I supposed to prove who I am when their system is rejecting the correct information?

Ugh the same EXACT thing happened to me back in october! The system is such garbage. I swear they make these verification questions just to trip people up and deny benefits. I answered my mother's maiden name correctly and it still locked me out. had to call like 40+ times before i got through.

how long did it take u to get ur account unlocked after u finally reached someone? im going on week 3 of this nightmare 😭

0 coins

took another 10 days after i talked to someone... they had to 'elevate' my case to a supervisor or something. total joke.

0 coins

elevate to a supervisor = put your paper on another stack and forget about it for a week 🤡

After trying the regular phone line for days and getting nowhere, I finally tried this service called Claimyr that got me connected to an actual person at unemployment! They stayed on hold so I didn't have to, then connected me when an agent picked up. Talking to a real person got my account unlocked within 24 hours - best money I've spent to get my benefits flowing again. Check them out at claimyr.com or their explanation video here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

That sounds too good to be true. Does it actually work? I've been trying to reach someone for weeks.

100% worked for me! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after being on hold for hours multiple days in a row. They called and when they got someone, my phone rang and I was talking to a real agent.

0 coins

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

0 coins

No catch - they just automate the hold process. The unemployment office still fixed my issue directly, Claimyr just got me to a human who could help.

0 coins

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

0 coins

It actually connected me to a real NYSDOL agent. They don't handle your claim - they just handle the frustrating hold process. I had my account unlocked same day after weeks of trying.

I had this EXACT same problem. The system is broken AF. What worked for me was going into an actual unemployment office in person with my ID and birth certificate. Waited 2 hours but at least got it fixed that day.

Holy crap the identity verification is a nightmare rn. I got locked out because i couldnt remember which previous address they wanted (I've moved 3 times in 2 years). When you finally get thru to someone ask them to notate your account for an IDme specialist to contact you - thats what finally worked for me.

Thanks for the tip about the IDme specialist! I'll definitely mention that when I get through to someone. Did they call you or email?

They sent me an email first with a link to schedule a video call. Had to show my drivers license and answer some questions. Whole thing took like 15 min once I got to the call.

If you've been locked out because of identity verification issues, here's what you need to do: First, don't panic. This happens to a LOT of people. The system is extremely sensitive and sometimes rejects correct information. Try these steps: 1) Call the main unemployment number as early as possible (7:30am is best) - but expect long waits 2) While waiting, prepare all your documents: ID, SSN card, birth certificate, any correspondence with your claim number 3) When you reach someone, specifically request an "identity verification specialist" - regular agents often can't help with this 4) If you can't get through on the phone (very common), use Claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold and connect you when an agent is available. Many people in this sub have reported success with this method. 5) As a last resort, visit a physical DOL office with all your documents Remember to stay calm when speaking with agents - they're overwhelmed but they can reset the verification so you can try again. I went through this exact nightmare in June and got it resolved. Hang in there!

The physical office tip is clutch. I went to the one on Varick Street and they fixed my issue in 20 minutes. The phone system is absolutely useless.

Can confirm claimyr.com works. I was about to lose my mind after 3 weeks of calling but they got me through to someone who fixed my issue.

Thank you so much for this detailed advice! I'll try calling right at 7:30 tomorrow and if that fails I might try that Claimyr service. Just need to get this fixed asap 😫

Look I hate to say it but sometimes they do this on purpose. They make the verification system super difficult so people give up. Saves the state money. My friend who works in state gov (not unemployment) told me this is actually by design for some of these systems.

0 coins

This. I've been saying this for years. It's like when insurance companies deny claims hoping you won't appeal. They're counting on a certain percentage of people just giving up.

0 coins

conspiracy theory much? lol sometimes systems just suck because the government uses outdated technology and underpaid IT staff

0 coins

Not a conspiracy theory at all. It's called administrative burden and it's a well-documented strategy in public policy. Make it difficult enough and people abandon their claims.

i got locked out 4 times trying to verify my identity!! this ny unemployment system is literally from 1995 i swear. i ended up having to do a video call with a rep where i showed my ID, social security card, and had to answer questions. took forever to set up but finally got it worked out.

Check your credit report! Sometimes the security questions pull from old addresses or variations of your mom's name that might be listed incorrectly on your credit file. My mom remarried when I was young so I was using her current last name but the system wanted her ACTUAL maiden name from before she was ever married.

0 coins

Omg that might be it! My mom remarried too and I might have been using her first husband's last name (my dad) instead of her actual maiden name! That would explain it. Thanks for this insight!

0 coins

No problem! The system is super picky about these details. Hope you get it sorted!

the funny thing is the MORE they try to prevent fraud the MORE regular people get screwed while actual scammers have all the workarounds already figured out 🤦‍♂️

0 coins

THIS!!!! My cousin works in cyber security and says the same thing. Legitimate users suffer while actual fraudsters have already moved on to the next exploit.

0 coins

fr fr its just security theater to make it look like theyre doing something

0 coins

anyone else notice how they make everything 10x harder since covid? like they're trying to make up for all the fraud from 2020 by punishing everyone now

0 coins

The pendulum has definitely swung way too far in the other direction. They used to just approve everyone, now they deny everyone by default.

tip: when you get locked out IMMEDIATELY request a callback through the online form. dont wait. they take forever to process these but at least youll be in the queue. go to Contact Us > Identity Verification Issues > Request Callback

0 coins

Thanks! I already tried that form but havent heard back. It's been 5 days now...

0 coins

yeah they say 48 hours but it took them 2 weeks to call me back 🙄 keep trying the main line too

I was sooooo frustated dealing with the same problem a few months back. Eventually had to get my state senator's office involved. They have direct contacts at unemployment and fixed it in 2 days after I spent WEEKS trying on my own. Find your rep's office and call them!

0 coins

💯 this is the real pro tip. government offices move quick when another government office is breathing down their neck

0 coins

I didn't even think about contacting my rep! That's a great idea if all else fails. Thank you!

0 coins

They asked me my mothers maiden name too, but turns out they we're looking for her legal name (first middle last) and not just her last name like every other security question in existence 🤬 stupidest system ever

0 coins

i reached someone using claimyr.com last month when I had a similar issue. Got through to an actual human at NY unemployment in like 30 min instead of calling for days. worth every penny considering i was able to get my back benefits released!

0 coins

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work

0 coins

I mean believe what you want but i literally got my 3k in backpay after using it so 🤷‍♀️ sorry it hurt your feelings or whatever lol

0 coins

I can second this - used claimyr after weeks of calling. finally talked to someone who fixed my claim in minutes.
