NY unemployment ID.me verification keeps rejecting my photos despite sending birth certificate

I've been stuck in ID.me verification hell with NY unemployment since January 2025 and I'm at my wits end! Every single time I take pictures for the verification, they claim my photos don't match. I've tried EVERYTHING - different lighting, having someone else take the photo, using different devices. I even sent in my birth certificate as additional proof, and they had the nerve to tell me it 'doesn't match my name.' Well of course it doesn't match exactly - I got married and my last name changed! Hello!!!??? Has anyone else dealt with this nightmare? I'm missing out on benefits I desperately need while they play these games. How did you finally get verified?

The ID.me verification process can be incredibly frustrating. Try these steps that worked for me: 1. Use a neutral background (plain white wall) 2. Make sure your face is evenly lit (no shadows) 3. Remove glasses, hats, anything that might obstruct facial features 4. Hold your ID directly next to your face in the selfie 5. For the name change issue, you need to submit your marriage certificate along with your birth certificate They're not intentionally making it difficult - their facial recognition software is just very particular. Keep trying and be patient.

Thank you for the tips! I've tried most of these except holding my ID right next to my face - maybe that will help. But I don't have my marriage certificate anymore (lost it during our last move). Do you know if there's another document I could use instead? This is so frustrating!!!

The NY unemployment ID.me verification process is unnecessarily complex. For your name change issue, you'll need to provide documentation showing the connection between your birth name and current legal name. If you don't have your marriage certificate, you can order a certified copy from the vital records office in the county/state where you were married. In the meantime, try the video verification option instead of just photos - it has a higher success rate for many people who struggle with the automated system.

I didn't even know there was a video verification option! Where do I find that? And how long does it typically take to get a new copy of a marriage certificate? I'm in week 3 of no benefits because of this stupid verification issue.

Anyone else think the whole ID.me thing is just another way for them to delay giving people their money?? I swear they make these hoops impossible to jump through ON PURPOSE. They rejected my photos 4 times before randomly accepting the 5th one that looked EXACTLY THE SAME as the others!

While it's definitely frustrating, I don't think it's intentional. The system is trying to prevent identity theft, which has been a huge problem with unemployment claims. The facial recognition technology just isn't perfect yet.

Yeah right. My cousin works for a tech company and says their facial recognition is WAY better than what ID.me uses. They could fix this if they wanted to. They're CHOOSING to make it hard!!!

After struggling with ID.me for weeks (they rejected my photos 9 times!), I finally got through by using Claimyr to connect with an actual human agent. The rep manually helped me with the verification process and overrode the system issues I was having. They got me connected to a real person at NYSDOL in under 15 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. Check out their demo at https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - it was totally worth it to finally get my verification issues resolved and my benefits flowing again.

I've never heard of Claimyr before. So they actually got you through to a real person? Did the agent help override the ID.me issues? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

Yes! The Claimyr service connected me to an actual NYSDOL agent who was able to note on my account that I was having ID.me verification issues. They then arranged for a specialist to contact me directly the next day who helped manually verify my identity. Completely solved my problem after weeks of frustration. Their website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

I work with unemployment claims professionally, and here's what you need to know about the ID.me verification process with NY unemployment: 1. For name discrepancies due to marriage/divorce, you absolutely need documentation showing the name change. Order a certified copy of your marriage certificate from the county clerk where you were married. This typically takes 2-4 weeks, but many counties offer expedited processing for an additional fee. 2. While waiting for that document, request a manual verification review. In your ID.me account, look for the "Verify with an ID.me Trusted Referee" option, which initiates a video call with a human agent. 3. During the video call, explain your situation. Even without your marriage certificate, they can sometimes verify you through alternative documentation and questioning. 4. If all else fails, contact your local state representative or senator's office. Their constituent services can often intervene in these cases and expedite resolution. The system isn't perfect, but there are legitimate pathways to resolve verification issues.

Thank you so much for this detailed advice! I just found the "Verify with an ID.me Trusted Referee" option and scheduled a video call for tomorrow morning. I've also ordered a copy of my marriage certificate with expedited processing. Really appreciate the help!

Not to get off topic but when i did my id.me thing last month i got verified but then my benefits were delayed another 2 weeks for a "standard review" has anyone else had that happen?

That's actually related to this discussion. After ID.me verification, NYSDOL often conducts its own internal review, especially if there were any issues during the verification process. This secondary review typically takes 7-10 business days but can stretch to 2 weeks during busy periods. It's an additional fraud prevention measure.

my sister had this same problem but her name changed cuz of divorce not marriage. she had to go to the office in person and bring all her papers

Which office did she go to? I didn't know there was an option to verify in person! That might be easier than all this online nightmare.

the big unemployment office in albany but she said it was a 3 hour wait so maybe try that video call thing first

UPDATE: I finally got verified!!! I took everyone's advice here and did the video call with the ID.me Trusted Referee. The woman was super helpful and understood my situation right away. I showed her my driver's license and social security card, explained the name change situation, and she was able to manually approve my verification! My NY unemployment claim is now processing and they said I should receive all my back benefits within 3-5 business days. THANK YOU all for your help - I would have given up without your suggestions.

That's great news! So glad you got it resolved. Make sure to keep an eye on your payment status in your online account. Sometimes there can be additional processing steps, but the hard part is behind you now.
