Meeting with New York Unemployment Advisor - What to Expect?

Got my first appointment with an unemployment advisor next Tuesday. Really nervous about it and dont know what to bring or expect. Anyone been through this recently? They didn't give me much info in the email just the time and zoom link.

Just had mine last week. Make sure you have your ID ready (drivers license works), last few paystubs, and the termination letter if you got one. Keep your W2 from last year handy too. The advisor was actually pretty chill.

thanks! did they ask about job search stuff? ive been applying but haven't kept great records 😬

0 coins

Yeah they did! But don't stress too much, just be honest about where youve applied. They mainly wanna see your making an effort

Hey I was stuck trying to get an appointment forever but I found this site claimyr.com that calls and gets you through to someone. Cost me $20 but worth every penny. Check out this video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds sketchy ngl... they actually legit? 🤔

100% legit! saved me hours of calling. They just stay on hold for you and connect when someone picks up

$20 seems steep just to make a phone call tbh

cheaper than wasting hours calling yourself trust me lol been there done that 💯

The zoom meetings are way better than the old in-person ones ngl. You can literally be in ur pjs and they dont care 🤣

wish i had this info b4 my meeting last month lol

Don't worry too much Emma! I had my meeting about a month ago and it was way less scary than I thought it would be. The advisor walked me through everything step by step. One thing I'd add to what others have said - if you're getting any other benefits or have a spouse who works, have that info ready too. They asked me about my household situation. Also, test your zoom setup beforehand! Good luck, you got this! 💪

Thanks Dylan! That's really reassuring to hear. I'm definitely gonna test my zoom beforehand after reading about Omar's wifi disaster 😅 Quick question - when they ask about household situation, do they need like tax documents or just verbal info?

Just verbal info from what I remember! They might ask for documents later if there's something specific, but during the meeting they just wanted to know basics like if anyone else in your household is working and bringing in income. Nothing too crazy!

Been through this twice now (got laid off again unfortunately 😭). One thing nobody mentioned - they might ask about any side gigs or freelance work you've been doing while unemployed. Even if it's just like $50 from selling stuff online, be upfront about it. They're pretty cool about it but they need to know for the records. Also seconding what everyone said about having documents ready - I keep mine in a folder on my desktop now so I can pull them up quick during zoom calls. The advisors are actually really helpful once you get past the initial nervousness!

Oh wow twice?? That's rough dude 😔 Thanks for the heads up about side gigs - I did sell some old furniture on Facebook marketplace last month so I'll definitely mention that. The desktop folder idea is genius too, gonna set that up tonight! Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences, makes me feel way less anxious about Tuesday 🙏

Pro tip from someone who's been there - arrive to the zoom call like 2-3 minutes early but don't stress if you're exactly on time. They usually run a few minutes behind anyway. Also keep a glass of water nearby because talking for 30+ minutes straight can make your mouth dry! One more thing - if they ask about your job search and you haven't kept perfect records, just be honest about the types of places you've applied to and roughly how many per week. They're more interested in seeing that you're actively looking than having every single detail documented. You're gonna do great! 👍

This is all such great advice! The water tip is actually really smart - I always get dry mouth when I'm nervous 😅 And yeah I've been applying to probably like 4-5 places a week but definitely didn't write down every single one, so good to know they're not expecting a perfect spreadsheet or anything. Feeling so much more prepared now thanks to everyone! Will definitely report back after Tuesday's meeting to let others know how it goes 💙

Hey Emma! I just had my meeting last week and wanted to add one more thing - if you've been doing any kind of training or certification courses while unemployed (even free online ones), definitely mention those! They love hearing that you're working on improving your skills. Also, don't be surprised if they ask about your availability for work - they might want to know if you have any restrictions on hours, location, etc. The whole thing was way more conversational than I expected, almost like they're just trying to help you succeed rather than catch you doing something wrong. You've got this! 🌟

That's such a good point about mentioning training courses! I actually started a free digital marketing course on Coursera a couple weeks ago but didn't think to bring it up. Thanks for the tip! It's really reassuring to hear that it's more conversational than interrogational - I was picturing like a formal interview setting where they're looking for reasons to deny my claim 😰 Everyone's advice has been so helpful, I'm actually starting to feel excited rather than just nervous about Tuesday!
