Got approved for ESD benefits but confused about mandatory WorkSource appointment - what happens?

Hey everyone! I just got approved for unemployment benefits on 3/7 (after waiting FOREVER) and today I received a letter saying I need to schedule a WorkSource appointment. This is my first time on unemployment and I'm totally confused about what this appointment actually is? Do I need to bring anything specific? Will they make me apply for jobs right there? My industry is construction and things are slow right now but picking back up in May - do I need to tell them that? Really nervous about messing something up and losing my benefits right after getting approved.

The WorkSource appointment is just part of the regular unemployment requirements. It's basically an orientation where they explain job search services available to you and review your responsibilities while receiving benefits. You should bring ID, your ESD paperwork, and a resume if you have one. They won't make you apply for jobs on the spot, but they will explain the job search requirements (which is 3 activities per week). Make sure you schedule it ASAP because if you miss the deadline to schedule, it can affect your benefits.

Oh thank you!! That's a relief. I was worried they were going to force me to take any random job. Will they work with me on the fact that construction is seasonal and I already have a position lined up in May? Or do I still need to do all the job search stuff?

its just a waste of time tbh... they make u sit there and watch videos about making resumes and stuff. i had to do it last yr and the lady was RUDE af. just smile and nod and get through it lol

Same experience. 2 hours of my life I'll never get back! But yeah, you gotta do it or they can stop your payments.

LISTEN CAREFULLY! Do NOT miss this appointment! I missed mine because the letter came late (typical ESD incompetence) and they stopped my benefits for THREE WEEKS while I had to appeal and prove I never got the notice in time. The whole system is designed to trip people up so they can deny benefits. Make sure you document EVERYTHING - take screenshots of your appointment confirmation and bring a copy of every single document they've ever sent you. And arrive 15 minutes early because sometimes they mark you as a no-show if you're even 1 minute late!!!!

Oh god that sounds terrible! I'm definitely going to schedule it today and set like 5 alarms. Did you have to do anything special to get your benefits restarted after they stopped them?

You might qualify for standby status since you mentioned you have work starting again in May. With standby, you can be exempt from job search requirements for up to 8 weeks (sometimes more in construction). You'll need to ask about this specifically during your WorkSource appointment and have a return-to-work date from your employer. Bring documentation showing your expected return date if possible. The regular WorkSource appointment is mandatory for everyone on UI. They'll explain the online job search tools, resume assistance, and other resources. It's actually quite helpful if you go in with the right mindset.

Thank you! I didn't know about the standby option. My boss did say I'd be back first week of May when the new project starts. I'll ask him for something in writing about the return date before my appointment.

I just had mine last week and it wasn't that bad. Mine was virtual btw - they might give u that option depending on where u live. They basically go over how to use WorkSourceWA.com and tell you about the resources they have. The job search stuff was the main focus - they are SUPER strict about the 3 activities per week. Make sure you start doing those right away and documenting them properly in your weekly claims.

Wait I had no idea I should've been doing job searches already! I just got approved last week and haven't done any yet. Will I be in trouble for that?

You should be fine for the first week or two but start doing them NOW. They usually give a grace period after initial approval but don't push it.

If getting through to someone at ESD about your WorkSource questions becomes an issue (which is pretty common), I recently used a service called Claimyr that actually worked. They got me connected to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 that shows how it works. I used it when I needed to talk to someone about my standby status for my seasonal landscaping work, similar to your construction situation.

Thank you for that tip! I've tried calling ESD twice already and got disconnected both times. If I have issues after my WorkSource appointment I'll definitely check out that service.

This is an important point. You're required to do 3 job search activities each week you claim benefits, starting with your first week. The only exception is if you're approved for standby status, which you should ask about at your appointment since you mentioned having a job starting in May.

Congrats on getting approved! That's the hardest part tbh. The WorkSource stuff is annoying but straightforward. Just make sure you actually attend!

One more thing to add: during your WorkSource appointment, ask them specifically about the job search requirements for your industry. Construction often has different considerations because of its seasonal nature. If you already have a return-to-work date, bring documentation from your employer stating when you'll return (exact date is important). This can help you qualify for standby status, which would exempt you from job search requirements for a specific period. The maximum standby period in Washington is normally 8 weeks, but there are sometimes extensions for certain industries like construction.

Thank you! I just texted my foreman and he's going to email me something on company letterhead with my return date. Fingers crossed for standby status!
