How to obtain unemployment records online through NYS Department of Labor
I need to get copies of my unemployment payment history from 2023 for tax purposes but I'm not sure how to access these records online. I've been logging into my.ny.gov but can't find where the historical records are stored. Does anyone know the specific steps to download or view past unemployment payment records through the NYS Department of Labor website? My accountant needs documentation showing all payments received last year.

You can access your payment history through the my.ny.gov portal. After logging in, go to 'Unemployment Services' then look for 'Payment History' or 'Benefit Payment Summary.' You should be able to view and print records going back several years. For tax documents specifically, your 1099-G should also be available in the same section.

•Thank you! I found the Unemployment Services section but I'm only seeing current year information. Is there a separate archive section for older records?

had the same problem last month, the old records are there but you have to click on a dropdown menu that says something like 'select year' or 'view previous years' - it's not obvious where it is

•I'll look for that dropdown menu. Sometimes these government websites hide important features in weird places.

If you're having trouble finding historical records online, you can also request them by calling the NYS Department of Labor directly. However, getting through can be challenging due to high call volume. I recently discovered a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps people get connected to actual agents faster. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Might be worth trying if you can't locate the records online.

•Interesting, never heard of that service before. How does it actually work to get you through to the NYS Department of Labor faster?

•From what I understand, it handles the calling process and waits in the queue for you, then connects you when an agent becomes available. Saved me hours of redialing when I needed help with my claim status.

I had to get my records for a mortgage application and found them under 'Document Center' in my unemployment account. They keep everything for like 4-5 years I think. You can download PDF copies of your payment statements and 1099-G forms.

•Perfect, I'll check the Document Center too. Having multiple options is helpful since I really need these records ASAP.

just a heads up the NYS Department of Labor website can be really slow sometimes especially when everyone's trying to access records around tax season, if it times out just try again later

The system is so frustrating! I needed my records for an apartment application and it took me three different attempts on different days to finally get the PDFs to download properly. The NYS Department of Labor really needs to upgrade their technology - it's 2025 and their website still feels like it's from 2010.

•Totally agree about the website being outdated. I always use Chrome or Firefox because it seems to work better than other browsers with their system.

I just went through this same process last week! Here's what worked for me: After logging into my.ny.gov, go to Unemployment Services, then look for "View Payment History" or "Benefit History." There should be a date range selector where you can choose 2023. If you're still having trouble, try clearing your browser cache first - the NYS site can be glitchy. Also, make sure you're accessing it during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening) when the system is less congested. The records should include all your weekly payment amounts and dates which is exactly what your accountant needs for tax purposes.

•Thanks for the detailed steps! The tip about clearing browser cache is really helpful - I've had issues with government websites not loading properly before. I'll try accessing it early morning when the system should be less busy. Did you find that the 2023 records included the exact dates and amounts for each payment? My accountant specifically needs the weekly breakdown.

Yes, absolutely! The payment history shows everything broken down by week - the exact date each payment was issued, the gross amount, any deductions (like taxes withheld), and the net amount deposited. It's really comprehensive. Just make sure when you're in the payment history section to select the full year range for 2023 (January 1 - December 31) so you don't miss any payments. The system sometimes defaults to just showing a few months at a time. You can export it all as a PDF which makes it easy to send to your accountant. One other tip - if you had any waiting weeks or benefit reductions during 2023, those will show up in the records too with explanations, which can be helpful for tax purposes.

•This is exactly the level of detail I was hoping to find! The breakdown by week with gross amounts, deductions, and net deposits sounds perfect for what my accountant needs. I really appreciate the tip about selecting the full year range - I can see how the system defaulting to just a few months could cause someone to miss payments. The PDF export feature will definitely make this easier to share. Thanks for mentioning that waiting weeks and benefit reductions show up with explanations too - I did have a couple of waiting periods in 2023 so it's good to know those will be documented properly in the records.

I went through this exact same situation a few months ago when I needed my 2023 unemployment records for my tax return. The key thing that helped me was logging into my.ny.gov and going to the Unemployment Services section, then looking for "Benefit Payment History" - it's usually listed under a "View Benefits" or "Payment Information" tab. Once you're there, you'll see a date selector where you can choose the year 2023. The system will generate a detailed report showing all your weekly payments with dates, amounts, and any tax withholdings. You can then download it as a PDF which is perfect for your accountant. If the page seems to hang or load slowly, try refreshing or coming back during off-peak hours - the NY system can be overwhelmed during tax season. The records should have everything your accountant needs including the total annual amount that matches your 1099-G.
