How many weeks to get unemployment benefits approved by NYS Department of Labor?

I submitted my unemployment application on my.ny.gov about 10 days ago and I'm wondering how many weeks it typically takes to actually start receiving benefits? My claim status shows 'under review' and I haven't heard anything back yet. I'm getting really stressed about my bills piling up. Does anyone know the usual timeline for NYS Department of Labor to process new claims? I made sure to answer all the questions correctly and uploaded my ID verification documents right away.

The standard processing time for NYS Department of Labor unemployment claims is typically 2-3 weeks if there are no complications. However, if your claim goes into adjudication (which happens when they need to verify employment details or investigate the reason you left your job), it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer. Since you're only 10 days in, you're still within the normal timeframe.

Thanks, that's somewhat reassuring. How will I know if it goes into adjudication? Will they send me a notice or does the status just change online?

Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while your initial claim is being processed! A lot of people miss this step and then lose out on benefits for those weeks. You should be able to file weekly claims on the my.ny.gov portal even if your main claim hasn't been approved yet.

Wait, I can file weekly claims before my initial claim is approved? I had no idea! I'll log in and check for that option right now.

mine took forever last year, like 6 weeks total because they had to verify my employment with my previous employer. the waiting is the worst part honestly

I've been trying to call NYS Department of Labor for weeks to check on my claim status but can never get through! The phone system is completely overwhelmed. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to a real person there? I'm going crazy not knowing what's happening with my application.

I had the same problem with calling NYS Department of Labor until I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They basically call for you and get you connected to an actual agent. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked - I got through to someone within a day and found out my claim was stuck because of a simple paperwork issue. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. Saved me weeks of frustration trying to call myself.

Just want to add that even after your claim gets approved, there's usually a one-week waiting period before you actually receive your first payment. So factor that into your timeline as well. The whole process from application to first payment can easily be 3-4 weeks minimum.

Two months?! That's terrifying. What ended up being the holdup in your case?
