How long does it take to process unemployment claims with NYS Department of Labor?
Just submitted my unemployment application through my.ny.gov yesterday after getting laid off from my warehouse job. The website says my claim is 'under review' but doesn't give any timeframe. I'm really stressed about when I'll start receiving benefits because I have rent due in two weeks. Does anyone know how long the NYS Department of Labor usually takes to process new claims? Is there anything I can do to speed this up?

Processing times vary but typically take 2-3 weeks for straightforward claims. If your employer doesn't contest the claim and you meet all eligibility requirements, it should move through adjudication fairly quickly. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval - you can backdate benefits once your claim is processed.

•Thanks! I wasn't sure if I should file weekly claims before getting approved. I'll start doing that right away.

took me almost 6 weeks last year but that was because my previous employer fought it. if you got laid off and it wasnt for misconduct it should be faster

I'm going through the same thing right now! Filed 10 days ago and still showing pending. The wait is killing me because I need to know if I qualify before I make any financial decisions. Has anyone had luck calling to check status?

•Calling NYS Department of Labor is nearly impossible with the call volume. I spent hours trying last month and either got busy signals or hung up on after waiting. If you really need to speak with someone, I recently discovered a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to unemployment agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me tons of frustration when I needed to resolve an adjudication issue.

The whole system is broken honestly. They make you jump through hoops and then take forever to process anything. I've been waiting 3 weeks just to get someone to look at my job search log issue. Meanwhile bills keep coming and they act like we're asking for charity instead of benefits we EARNED.

Just want to add that if you're waiting on processing, make sure your job search requirements are up to date. Even during the review period, you need to be documenting your job search activities. The NYS Department of Labor can ask for this information at any time and it could delay your benefits if you're not compliant.

•Good point about job search requirements. Do you know how many contacts per week they require now?

•Currently it's 3 job contacts per week, and they need to be documented in your job search log. Make sure you're keeping detailed records including company names, contact information, and dates.
