How long does NYS Department of Labor take to process unemployment claims?
I submitted my unemployment application through my.ny.gov about 10 days ago and haven't heard anything back yet. My claim status just says 'under review' and I'm starting to worry. I lost my job at a restaurant chain due to downsizing and really need these benefits to start soon. Does anyone know the typical processing time for NYS Department of Labor claims? My rent is due next week and I'm getting anxious about how long this might take.

Standard processing time for NYS Department of Labor unemployment claims is typically 2-3 weeks from the date you file, but it can vary depending on your situation. If there are any issues with your claim that require adjudication (like questions about your separation from work), it could take 4-6 weeks or longer. Since you mentioned downsizing, that should be straightforward, but sometimes they need to verify details with your former employer.

•Thanks for the info! Should I be worried that it's been 10 days already with no update? I haven't received any requests for additional information.

Mine took exactly 3 weeks last year when I got laid off from my manufacturing job. The key thing is to keep filing your weekly claims even while your initial claim is being processed. Don't wait for approval - start filing those weekly certifications right away or you'll lose benefits for those weeks. You can do this through the my.ny.gov portal every Sunday.

•Wait, I can file weekly claims before my initial claim is approved? I had no idea! I'll log in today and start doing that.

•Yes definitely! That's a common mistake people make. You need to claim every week you're unemployed, even during the waiting period.

•I had the same problem with getting through to NYS Department of Labor by phone - it's incredibly frustrating. I actually ended up using a service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. You can check it out at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. It was worth it just to get some real answers about my claim status instead of staring at that vague 'under review' message.

Just want to say hang in there - I know how stressful the waiting period is when you're worried about bills. Most people do get approved eventually if they qualify. Keep checking your my.ny.gov account for any messages or requests for documentation.

The NYS Department of Labor has been pretty overwhelmed lately from what I hear. My cousin works there and says they're still dealing with higher than normal claim volumes. But like others said, as long as you were laid off due to downsizing and not fired for misconduct, your claim should go through fine. Just takes time unfortunately.
