How long does NYS Department of Labor unemployment approval take after filing?
I submitted my unemployment application through my.ny.gov about 10 days ago and I'm still waiting to hear anything back from NYS Department of Labor. My claim status just says 'under review' and I haven't received any correspondence about next steps. I've been laid off from my warehouse job for two weeks now and really need to know how long this process typically takes. Does anyone know what the current processing times are? I'm getting anxious about paying my rent next month.

The initial processing usually takes 2-3 weeks from when you file your application with NYS Department of Labor. However, if there are any issues that require adjudication (like questions about your separation from work), it can take 4-6 weeks or sometimes longer. Have you been filing your weekly claims while waiting? You need to keep certifying even while your initial claim is being processed.

•Yes I've been doing the weekly claims but they all show $0. Should I be worried that something's wrong with my application?

Check your my.ny.gov account for any messages or required documents. Sometimes NYS Department of Labor needs additional verification like wage records or employment separation details. If you don't see anything there and it's been over 3 weeks, you might want to try calling them. Fair warning though - the phone lines are constantly busy and you'll probably get hung up on multiple times before getting through to someone.

•I had the same phone problem trying to reach NYS Department of Labor. After getting disconnected like 20 times, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of redialing and I finally got my claim status sorted out.

•How does that work exactly? Is it some kind of automated calling system?

The whole NYS Department of Labor system is a joke honestly. They make you jump through all these hoops and then take forever to process anything. I've been waiting 3 weeks just to get someone to explain why my claim was flagged for 'review' when I was clearly laid off through no fault of my own. Meanwhile bills keep coming and they act like we can just wait indefinitely for their bureaucracy to move.

•I feel your frustration! The waiting is the worst part when you're already stressed about money.

Just to add - if you were laid off for economic reasons (company downsizing, lack of work, etc.), your claim should process relatively quickly once they verify your employment history. The delays usually happen when there are questions about the reason for separation or if you have wages from multiple employers that need to be sorted out. Keep filing those weekly claims even if they show $0 - you'll get backpay once your claim is approved.
