How long until unemployment is approved by NYS Department of Labor?
I submitted my unemployment claim through my.ny.gov about 10 days ago and it's still showing 'pending review' on my account dashboard. I haven't received any correspondence asking for additional documentation and I answered all the questions during the initial application. My previous job let me go due to downsizing so there shouldn't be any eligibility issues. For those who've been through this process recently, how long did it take for NYS Department of Labor to approve your claim? I'm starting to stress about my rent payment next week.

The approval timeline varies but typically takes 2-4 weeks from your initial filing date. NYS Department of Labor has to verify your employment history with your former employer and confirm your eligibility. Since you mentioned downsizing, that's usually straightforward - no misconduct issues to investigate. Keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending! You'll get back pay for all approved weeks once the claim processes.

•Thank you! I wasn't sure about continuing the weekly claims while it's still pending. I'll make sure to keep doing those.

If you're having trouble getting through to check on your claim status, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me actually reach a NYS Department of Labor agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. It was way easier than trying to call myself and getting the busy signal constantly.

•Is this legit? I've been calling for days and can never get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor.

•Yeah it's real, they basically handle the calling and waiting for you. Saved me hours of frustration trying to reach someone about my adjudication issue.

The NYS Department of Labor system is so slow compared to other states. My cousin in Pennsylvania got approved in like 5 days. But yeah, definitely keep filing those weekly claims or you'll lose those weeks even if you get approved later.

ugh this brings back memories of my claim taking FOREVER last year. The worst part is you can't even get a real person on the phone to tell you what's happening with your case. They really need to fix their customer service

•Same experience here! The automated system is useless and the callback option never actually calls you back.

Just to add - if it goes beyond 4 weeks without any communication from NYS Department of Labor, that's when I'd recommend trying to contact them directly. Sometimes claims get stuck in adjudication if there's any question about your separation reason, even for layoffs. But 10 days is still well within the normal processing window.

I'm in a similar situation - filed my claim 8 days ago and still showing pending. It's reassuring to hear that 2-4 weeks is normal, though I wish they were more transparent about the process. @Sophie, have you tried logging into your my.ny.gov account to see if there are any messages or requests for additional info? Sometimes they post updates there before sending emails. Hang in there!
