How long does NYS Department of Labor unemployment approval take for initial claim?
Filed my unemployment claim online three days ago after getting laid off from my warehouse job. The website says my claim is 'under review' but doesn't give any timeframe. My savings are running low and I'm starting to stress about how long this approval process takes. Anyone know what the typical wait time is for NYS Department of Labor to approve a new unemployment claim? I made sure to submit all the required documents but haven't heard anything back yet.

The initial processing time for unemployment claims in New York typically takes 2-3 weeks from when you file. However, if your claim requires adjudication (like if there are questions about your separation from work), it can take 4-6 weeks or longer. Since you just filed three days ago, you're still well within the normal timeframe. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval.

•Thank you! I wasn't sure if I should be filing weekly claims yet. The my.ny.gov portal is a bit confusing about what to do while waiting.

took mine about 10 days last year but that was pretty fast compared to what other people were saying. depends on if they need to verify anything with your employer

If you need to speak with someone at NYS Department of Labor to check on your claim status, you might want to try claimyr.com - they help people get through to actual agents instead of waiting on hold forever. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I used it when my claim was stuck in adjudication and finally got answers about what was holding things up.

•Is that service legit? I'm hesitant to use third-party services for government stuff.

•Yeah it's legitimate - they don't ask for your personal info or anything like that. They just help you get through the phone system faster so you can actually talk to a real person at NYS Department of Labor.

OMG the waiting is the WORST part! I was checking my account like 20 times a day when I filed. The anxiety is horrible when you don't know if you're going to get approved and bills are piling up. Hang in there, most people do get approved eventually.

The NYS Department of Labor system is deliberately slow to discourage people from filing. They make it as difficult as possible hoping you'll just give up and find another job instead of collecting benefits you're entitled to. It's all about saving the state money at the expense of working people who paid into the system.

•While the system can definitely be frustrating, the processing times are mainly due to verification requirements and high volume. They do need to confirm employment history and separation details to prevent fraud.

Just keep filing your weekly claims and wait it out. Nothing else you can really do at this point.
