How long does it take for NYS Department of Labor unemployment to be approved?
Filed my unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor two weeks ago after getting laid off from my warehouse job. The status just says 'pending' and I haven't heard anything back yet. My friend said his got approved in like 3 days but mine is taking forever. Bills are piling up and I'm starting to stress. Does anyone know the typical timeframe for approval? Should I be worried that it's taking this long?

The typical processing time for NYS Department of Labor unemployment claims is usually 2-3 weeks if there are no issues with your application. Since you're at 10 days, you're probably getting close. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending - you can do this on the my.ny.gov portal. If there are any issues like discrepancies in your work history or reason for separation, it could take longer and go into adjudication.

•Thanks! I have been doing my weekly claims. What exactly is adjudication? Should I be worried if it goes to that?

mine took forever! like 6 weeks because they had to verify my employment with my old boss who was being difficult about returning their calls. if your employer responds quickly to NYS Department of Labor it should be faster

The approval timeline can vary depending on several factors. If your claim is straightforward with no issues, it typically takes 1-2 weeks. However, if there are any flags that require adjudication (like questions about your separation reason or work history), it can take 4-6 weeks or longer. Have you checked your my.ny.gov account to see if there are any determination letters or requests for additional information?

•I checked and there's nothing there asking for more info. Just says pending with no explanation. Is there a way to find out what's holding it up?

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor by phone to check on your claim status, I had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They help you get connected to an actual agent without waiting on hold for hours. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I was able to find out my claim was stuck because they needed to verify my last employer's information.

•Interesting, never heard of that service. Did they charge you a lot? I'm already stressed about money.

•They don't require any personal information upfront and it was worth it to finally talk to someone who could explain what was happening with my claim.

If you're getting frustrated trying to reach someone at NYS Department of Labor about your claim status, I had good luck using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual agent. They have this system that helps you navigate the phone tree and wait times. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Is it legit? I'm just worried about giving out personal info.

•Yeah it's legit, they just help you get through the phone system, you still talk directly to NYS Department of Labor agents yourself.

OMG I'm in the same boat but it's been 3 weeks for me! This is so stressful, I don't know how I'm going to pay rent if this takes much longer. Did you have to submit any additional documents? Maybe that's what's holding mine up?

•At 3 weeks you should definitely try calling NYS Department of Labor to check if they need anything else from you. Sometimes they request additional verification but the notice gets lost in the mail or email.

The whole system is a JOKE. I've been waiting 5 WEEKS and still nothing. They make it impossible to reach anyone and give you zero updates. Meanwhile rent is due and they act like we don't exist. This is peoples' livelihoods we're talking about!!

•I feel you on the frustration but hang in there. Once it gets approved you'll get all the back payments.

Just wanted to say mine got approved exactly at the 2 week mark, so there's hope! Got my first payment about 3 days after approval. Keep checking your my.ny.gov account daily.

Two weeks isn't that unusual, especially if you filed right after a holiday or during a busy period. Keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending - that's important. If you don't hear anything by week 3, then I'd definitely try calling or using one of those callback services people mentioned.
