How do I report 10 hours and 15 minutes of work on my NY unemployment claim?

I started a part-time job while still collecting ny unemployment benefits. Last week I worked exactly 10 hours and 15 minutes. When certifying my weekly benefits, the system asks me to select how many hours I worked from these ranges: 0-10 hours, 11-16 hours, etc. Do I round up to 11 hours and select the 11-16 range, or do I round down to 10 hours and select 0-10 hours? Really confused about this because I don't want to accidentally commit fraud or have my benefits reduced more than necessary. Anyone deal with this before? The website doesn't explain what to do with partial hours.

You should report 11-16 hours. They want you to round up for partial hours. I learned this the hard way when I reported 0-10 for working 10.5 hours and got flagged for an interview. The agent told me anything over the exact hour counts as the next bracket. Better to be safe than sorry!

Thanks for the info. Did they penalize you or was it just a warning?

No penalty thankfully, just had to wait 2 weeks for the interview to clear it up. But now I'm paranoid about everything I report lol.

This system is so stupid. Why can't they just let us enter the exact hours? 🤦‍♂️

After months of frustration trying to get answers from ny unemployment, I actually managed to talk to someone! Used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an actual human at NYSDOL in about 30 mins. The rep confirmed you should always round UP to the next bracket for any partial hours. Talking to an agent got my questions answered so fast - best money I've ever spent after wasting days trying to get through on my own. They have a demo video here if anyone's interested: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this for real? Sounds too good to be true after trying to call for weeks 🤔

Totally get the skepticism! I was desperate after 3 weeks of trying to get through. But it actually worked - they call and wait on hold for you, then call you when there's an agent. Saved me hours of hold music torture.

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

No catch really - they just automate the calling and waiting on hold part. I was at my wit's end trying to get through myself.

just checked it out, seems like they basically call on your behalf and wait through the hold times so you don't have to. genius tbh

always round up! My roommate got into trouble for rounding down. The system is designed to catch these little mistakes and then they freeze your account while they "investigate" 🙄

I got audited last year for this exact issue. If you report the wrong bracket, even by accident, they can consider it misrepresentation. When in doubt, ALWAYS round up. Yes you might get slightly less money that week but it's better than dealing with months of frozen benefits and having to appeal.

this happened to me too! took 6 weeks to resolve and I had to provide all my paystubs and timesheets. nightmare.

Wow that sounds terrible. I'll definitely round up then. Did they make you pay anything back?

They made me pay back the difference plus a small penalty. Not huge $ but the stress and time wasted was the real cost.

New York's unemployment system is so frustrating with these arbitrary brackets. In NJ they let you report exact hours down to the quarter hour. My advice based on experience: round UP always. Otherwise you risk an overpayment situation which is a huge headache to fix.

As someone who moved from NJ to NY, i agree the NY system is WAY more confusing. miss the NJ one tbh

Let me share what I've learned the hard way dealing with NY unemployment for months: First, ALWAYS round up with partial hours. The DOL specifically trains their reps to tell claimants this, but it's nowhere on their website (typical). Second, document EVERYTHING. Screenshot your certifications, keep all pay stubs, and note exactly when and how many hours you worked each day. If there's ever a discrepancy, you'll need this evidence. Third, if you ever need to actually speak with someone (which you inevitably will because their system is full of glitches), stop wasting days redialing. I used claimyr.com after my account got locked for a similar hour-reporting issue. They got me connected to an agent in about 45 minutes when I had spent literal days trying on my own. Lastly, the brackets are stupid but they're designed to catch people in technicalities. The system isn't your friend - it's designed to minimize payouts. Always err on the side of reporting more hours rather than fewer. Good luck navigating this mess of a system!

Thank you for this detailed response! This is exactly what I needed to know. Will definitely check out that service if I run into more issues.

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work

It's not a hack - it's just a service that calls and waits on hold for you. After spending 3 days trying to get through myself, it was worth it. But do whatever works for you!

Round up for sure. The brackets are stupid af but thats how it works. I also recommend keeping a work journal with EXACT hours just in case they ever audit you.

If ur getting paid by the hour at work, check ur paystub. Whatever the employer reports is what you should match. But generally with NY unemployment you round up for everything.

Arjun Patel

This is actually really important! If ur employer reports different hours than u do, it'll trigger a review automatically

Good point. I'll double check my paystub when I get it to make sure everything matches.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this Claimyr thing different? anyone actually have success with it?

I used it last month when my claim got stuck in pending for 6 weeks. Got through to someone who fixed it on the spot. Been getting payments normal since then.

So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when my cousin told me about it. Figured I had nothing to lose. Got a callback with an agent in like 40 mins. Check out claimyr.com if ur desperate

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS?

It worked for me 🤷‍♀️ Not saying it's magic but they did what they said - called and waited on hold so I didn't have to

Another day, another stupid design flaw in the ny unemployment system 😑 Why can't they just let us enter exact hours like literally every other state?!

Maya Diaz

I useto work for DOL (not in NY but similar system). The reason they have brackets instead of exact hours is to make it easier to match employer reporting with employee claims. Most employers report in whole hours only. The safest approach is ALWAYS round up. You might get a few dollars less that week but you won't trigger a fraud investigation.
