Got an ID.me email requesting video verification with a "Trusted Referee" for unemployment, but it mentions IRS - scam or legitimate?
I've been collecting unemployment since April and everything was fine, but today at 8:52 AM I received this strange email from ID.me saying I need to complete ID.me identity verification with a 'Trusted Referee' through video chat. The email has the subject line "Complete Your ID.me Identity Verification with a Trusted Referee" and it's really concerning me. The email says "We noticed you didn't complete your identity verification with ID.me. ID.me offers the ability to have a video chat with a Trusted Referee to help verify your identity. Once you are assigned a Trusted Referee, the video chat will take less than 10 minutes." What's weird is that the email mentions the Internal Revenue Service but I never started anything with them. It specifically says "If you would prefer to continue with the previous method you initiated at The Internal Revenue Service, please return to the The Internal Revenue Service site to continue your identity verification with ID.me." But I've never done anything with the IRS related to my unemployment! The email has a button labeled "Verify through a Trusted Referee" and includes this link: https://referee.id.me/en/supervised/attempts/b72ca408363446f0a2cffb253e7e1798/edit I'm really confused because my benefits have been coming in normally for like 9 months now without any issues. Why would I suddenly need to verify my identity through a video chat with someone? I'm worried this might be some kind of identity theft attempt but also don't want to lose my benefits if it's legit. The email is signed by "The ID.me Member Support Team" which seems official, but I still don't understand why they're referencing the IRS when I'm just collecting unemployment. Has anyone else gotten something like this? What should I do? Should I click that link and go through with the video verification or ignore it?

That's definitely a scam email! NY unemployment doesn't just randomly ask for ID.me verification after you've been collecting for months. The IRS mention is the dead giveaway - they have nothing to do with state unemployment. Delete it and don't click any links.

Thanks! I thought it seemed fishy but didn't want to ignore it if it was important. Glad I checked here first before clicking anything.

actually its not always a scam. NY has been doing random identity checks lately because of all the fraud. But the IRS part is weird.

The formatting looks wrong too. Official emails don't usually look that sloppy. And that URL string looks suspicious af 🚩

I was stuck in verification hell with ny unemployment last month. Nobody would answer calls and my benefits got frozen. I finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a real agent on the phone. Best decision ever - talking to an agent got my benefits flowing again in days instead of weeks. They have a yt video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

this sounds too good to be true... how does it actually work? the phone lines are impossible

They basically call for you and wait on hold, then alert you when an agent picks up. Saved me like 3 hours of hold music lol. Totally worth it to get my claim fixed.

seems kinda sketchy tbh... has anyone else used this?

I used it! Was desperate after 2 weeks of trying. Got a callback in about 40 mins and fixed my issue same day. Check out their site claimyr.com

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the unemployment system is such a nightmare right now

It's not magic, they just handle the hold time for you. But talking to an actual human at unemployment solved my problems so fast compared to waiting for emails.

That's 100% a phishing scam. Notice how it says "The Internal Revenue Service" twice with the weird capitalization? Scammers always make these little mistakes. Real government communications are professionally written. Also the weird link with all those random characters is super suspicious.

I've been on unemployment since February and got a similar email a few weeks ago. I ignored it and nothing happened to my benefits. They're still coming in like normal. If it was really important, they would contact you through your official unemployment portal or send a physical letter.

This!!! They always send official mail for anything important. The unemployment website message system is also where legit communications come through.

That's good to hear. I was worried my payments might stop if I ignored it. Do they ever send legit emails or is it always through the portal?

In my experience, they send emails telling you to check your portal for messages, but never with links to click or actions to take directly from the email.

Here's how to verify if this is legitimate or not: 1. DO NOT click the link in the email 2. Go directly to ID.me's official website and log in to your account 3. Check if there are any pending verification requirements 4. Alternatively, log into your NY unemployment account and see if there are any alerts or messages 5. If nothing shows up in either place, it's a scam NY has indeed been doing random verification checks because of massive fraud during the pandemic. But they would notify you through official channels, not a random email with weird formatting. If you're still worried about your account status, I'd recommend getting through to a live agent. Regular phone lines are useless right now, but I had success using claimyr.com to get a callback from an actual human at unemployment who could verify everything was fine with my account. The safest approach is to always go through official websites by typing the URL yourself or using the phone numbers listed on the official NY unemployment website.

This is super helpful, thank you! Just checked my unemployment portal and there are no alerts or messages about verification needed. Think I'll just ignore the email.

the fact that it mentions the IRS but you've been getting state unemployment is the red flag for me. those are completely seperate systems. I'd report it to both id.me and ny unemployment as a phishing attempt.

I actually went through legit ID.me verification when I first applied for unemployment. This doesn't look right. The trusted referee process is real but they don't email you like this out of the blue after you've been collecting for months. Be careful!

Same. The real verification emails look different and come right when you're applying, not randomly months later.

Good to know! Did your verification happen right at the beginning when you applied?

Yep, it was part of the initial application process. Never had to reverify months later.

SCAM SCAM SCAM!!! 🚨 These people are trying to steal your identity!! I got one just like this and when I called unemployment they confirmed it wasn't from them. If you already have been getting benefits why would they suddenly need to verify your ID? Think about it...

How did you manage to actually talk to someone at unemployment? I've tried calling but can never get through 😫

I work in IT security and this is what we call a "spear phishing" attack - they know you're on unemployment and they're using that to target you specifically. The url is suspicious and the weird IRS references make no sense. Never click links in emails you weren't expecting.

If anyone clicked it: 1) Change ALL your passwords immediately 2) Put a freeze on your credit 3) Monitor accounts for suspicious activity 4) Consider identity theft protection

something similar happened to me. turns out someone was trying to file for benefits using my information. You might wanna check if anyone has filed a claim using ur SSN. I had to wait on the phone for 3 HOURS to talk to someone about it 🤬

Omg that's terrifying! How did you find out someone filed using your info? And how did you fix it?

I got a letter in the mail about a claim I never filed. Had to call and verify my identity with unemployment, then file a police report for identity theft. It was a huge headache.

I'll go against the grain here and say CALL UNEMPLOYMENT directly to verify. Don't rely on reddit advice when your benefits are at stake. Use the official number from the NY unemployment website, not any number in that email.

Try claimyr.com - it's the only thing that worked for me to get through the phone nightmare. They call and wait on hold, then connect you with an agent.

Forward the email to phishing@irs.gov and reportfraud@labor.ny.gov - they track these scams. Meanwhile check your credit report to make sure no one took out accounts in your name.

if this is from a T-Mobile connection as it shows at the top, be aware there's been phishing scams specifically targeting T-Mobile users lately too.
