Finally got answers about my NY unemployment claim after a month of 'under review' status
Just want to share my experience after waiting forever to get my unemployment benefits. Its been almost five weeks since I applied and my claim has been stuck in 'being reviewed' status even though I already got my approval letter showing how much I would get. I received a severance package when I left my job (all at once) and was worried that might be delaying things. I finally got through to someone on the phone yesterday and had a surprisingly helpful 25 minute call. The agent told me my former company submitted all my documentation on November 12th and they didnt contest anything about my severance. He said my case was assigned to a claims specialist on November 15th at their Watertown office. The agent mentioned they have two main offices handling claims - if I get a call from a 315 area code, thats the Watertown office handling my case. Calls from the 518 area code come from their main office. He said I should expect some movement on my payments being released within the next 7-14 days. Feeling hopeful for the first time in weeks! Hang in there everyone - sometimes you actually get someone helpful on the phone.

Thats actually really helpful to know about the area codes. I keep getting calls from random numbers and ignoring them thinking theyre spam. Now I'll actually pick up if I see those area codes! Glad you got some movement finally

•Just be careful still, scammers can spoof those area codes. DOL usually sends emails saying they'll call you.

•Good point about the potential scams! But yeah they did email me first saying someone would call.

•I've been getting random calls with no messages for weeks. So annoying trying to figure out which ones matter 🤦♀️

After struggling to reach anyone through the regular phone line for over 3 weeks, I finally tried using Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback from an actual agent within 45 minutes! Talking to a real person got my claim unstuck and my payments started flowing the next week. Best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid quickly. They even have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Is this for real? Sounds too good to be true after I've been trying to call for a month straight

•100% worked for me. I was skeptical too but was desperate after constantly getting hung up on by the automated system. The service basically just stays on hold for you then connects you when they get a human.

•How does that even work? The phone system is literally designed to torture us 😩

•They use some kind of system that keeps dialing and stays on hold so you don't have to. When they get someone, they call you. Took less than an hour for me, and I had been trying for weeks on my own. claimyr.com if you're interested.

•It worked for me too last month. Was so done with the constant busy signals and disconnects.

I've been waiting 8 WEEKS and still under review. Called like 30 times and still can't get anyone helpful. Always just saying "wait longer" or "we don't have any updates". Unreal how they treat people who are already stressed about not having income.

•try contacting your state assembly person. I did that and suddenly my claim moved forward within 48 hours 🤷♂️

•really? didnt even know that was a option. How do I find out who mine is?

•Just google "find my NY state assembly person" and put in your address. They have staff just for helping with unemployment issues. They can work magic sometimes!

Anyone know if severance affects your benefits? My company offered me 6 weeks pay but I'm worried it will delay everything like it seems to have done for the OP.

•From what I understand, you have to report it and it can delay the start of your benefits. They won't pay you unemployment for the weeks covered by severance.

•That makes sense. Wasnt sure if they would just reduce the amount or make me wait.

•I got 4 weeks severance and had to wait exactly that long before benefits started. Just be honest when you apply and report it.

For anyone struggling to get answers from NY unemployment, here's what worked for me: First, document EVERYTHING. Dates of calls, who you spoke with if possible, and what was said. This is super important if you need to escalate later. Second, try calling right when they open at 8:00 AM. The queue fills up fast, so being early helps a ton. Third, if you're still struggling after multiple attempts, you have several options: 1. Contact your state assembly member or senator's office - they have special channels to DOL 2. Submit a message through the online portal AND follow up with a call referencing your message 3. Use a service like claimyr.com (I was skeptical but it actually got me through to a person when nothing else worked) 4. Try the alternate phone numbers - sometimes the less publicized ones have shorter wait times Also, be SUPER clear about what you need when you finally get someone. The first level reps often can't help with complex issues but can transfer you to a specialist. Hang in there everyone. The system is frustrating but eventually works if you're persistent!

•Yeah, I was hesitant too but after 3 weeks of getting nowhere I tried it. Had a callback in about 35 mins. Definitely worth checking out if you're desperate like I was.

My claim has been pending for 7 weeks now. No letter, no nothing. This gives me hope that maybe I'll actually hear something eventually.

The fact that the system is so broken that we celebrate when basic customer service happens is really sad tbh. Glad you got help tho OP! 👍

Anyone know if there's a way to check which office your claim is assigned to without having to call? Would be nice to know if mine is moving at all.

•Nope, the online system is useless for that kind of detail. You literally have to talk to someone.

•The online messaging system is garbage too. I sent 3 messages and never got responses to any of them.

Not to be that guy, but don't get your hopes up too much. I was told "1-2 weeks" THREE SEPARATE TIMES and it still took over 2 months to get my first payment. They just tell you what you want to hear sometimes.

•Same happened to me. "2 weeks" turned into 10 weeks. It's criminal how they treat people.

did they say anything about backpay? I've been waiting 6 weeks and worried I won't get paid for all these weeks once it's finally approved

Maya Diaz
•The agent said I should get everything from when I was eligible (after my severance period ended) up until now. So yes you should get backpay!

Congrats on getting some answers!! What number did you call? I've been trying the main one for weeks with no luck.

•I used the main number (888-209-8124) but called at exactly 8:01am. That seemed to help get into the queue before it filled up.

its crazy how this whole process is such a black box. we literally have no idea whats happening with our claims until someone decides to tell us. meanwhile bills piling up and we just gotta wait 🤦♂️

•fr tho. why can't they have like a real-time status tracker that actually tells you something useful?

•exactly!! every other company has tracking for everything these days but NY unemployment still operating like its 1985

This is super helpful, thank you for sharing all the details! I'm currently stuck in the same "under review" limbo for about 3 weeks now. The info about the area codes is gold - I've definitely been ignoring calls thinking they were spam. Going to try calling early tomorrow morning at 8am sharp. It's encouraging to hear that someone actually got through and received useful information. Fingers crossed the rest of us start seeing some movement soon too! 🤞
