Confused about direct deposit setup after filing new claim with NY unemployment
So I recently had to file a new unemployment claim after my temp job ended in October. My previous claim from about 14 months ago had expired. I had direct deposit set up with my old claim and got payments fine, but after filing this new claim I cant remember if I need to re-enter my banking info or if it carries over automatically. I already did the identity verification stuff and got approved, but now I'm paranoid about missing a payment because of some direct deposit issue. The website is so confusing and doesnt clearly say if banking info transfers from old claims to new ones. Has anyone dealt with this recently? I really need these payments to hit my account ASAP since rent is due next week and I'm already behind on bills.

Yes, you do have to resubmit your direct deposit info for a new claim. When I filed my new claim last summer after my old one expired, I had to re-enter all my banking information even though I'd been getting direct deposit before. The system doesn't automatically transfer that info over for security reasons. Go to your payment method section in your account and make sure its updated.

•Ugh thanks for confirming. Of course they make everything extra complicated. Did ur first payment take a while to hit ur account after u updated the direct deposit?

•It took like 3 business days for me after I updated it. Not too bad but definitely update it ASAP!

•This is correct. I work in financial services and they purge bank info between claims for security/compliance reasons. Always better to double check than miss a payment!

I was stuck in the same cycle with my claim back in August. Tried calling a million times but couldnt get thru to anyone. Finally tried this service called claimyr.com that got me connected to a real person at ny unemployment. It was the best money I ever spent because the agent fixed my direct deposit issue in like 5 mins and my payments started coming in right away. They just call and wait on hold for you then connect you when an agent picks up. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Sounds like an ad. Does this actually work? I've been trying to reach someone for WEEKS.

•100% worked for me! I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying to call myself for days. They actually got me through to someone in about 2 hours while I just went about my day until my phone rang.

•Hmm I've seen this mentioned before on other threads. Might have to try it since I've wasted so many hours already trying to get through 🤔

•I dunno man... another service promising miracles with the unemployment system? I'll stick to the 300 calls a day method lol

•Do whatever works for you! Just sharing what solved my problem after literal weeks of frustration. I was about ready to throw my phone out the window after getting hung up on for the 50th time 🤷♀️

Just to add another data point - I had to re-enter my direct deposit info when I filed a new claim in September. Their system is SO stupid that it doesn't warn you about this anywhere, and I missed my first payment because it defaulted to debit card without telling me! Make sure you go to payment preferences and update it ASAP.

Here's what I know about the NY unemployment direct deposit situation after dealing with them 3 separate times: After filing a new claim, you ABSOLUTELY need to resubmit direct deposit information. The system does not carry over your banking details from previous claims - this is for security purposes. After your claim is approved: 1) Log into your NY.gov account and go to your unemployment dashboard 2) Look for "Update Your Payment Method" or similar wording 3) Re-enter your routing and account numbers 4) Save and verify the information If you don't do this, they'll default to sending you a debit card, which takes much longer to arrive and is a huge hassle. I've seen people wait 2+ weeks for those cards. If you're having trouble with the website (which crashes constantly), your best option is reaching a live agent. Regular phone calls can take forever, but I had success using claimyr.com which got me through to an agent who fixed my payment issues right away. Important: Make any direct deposit changes early in the week. Changes made Friday-Sunday often don't process until the following week due to their system maintenance schedule. Hope this helps!

•This is really helpful, thank you! I'm gonna update my info right now. Did you notice any delay with the first payment after updating direct deposit?

•First payment usually comes 2-3 business days after your direct deposit info is properly set up. If it takes longer than that, something might be wrong with your claim and you should try to speak with an agent.

The NY unemployment system is such a joke. Why cant they just keep our bank info on file? Why make us jump through 500 hoops everytime? I swear they make these systems difficult on purpose so people give up tryna get what they deserve. 😤

•Preach! I think it's intentional too. They claim it's for "security" but really they just don't want people to get benefits.

•It's because so many unemployment systems are running on ancient software from like the 1980s. I'm not even joking - many states use COBOL which barely anyone knows how to program anymore.

•Yep and they don't wanna invest in fixing it cause who cares about poor people amirite 🙄

I think most people are right that you need to resubmit direct deposit info, but just be warned the system might glitch anyway. I did everything right and updated my bank info right after filing my new claim last month, and they STILL tried to send me a debit card first! Had to call and spend 4 hours on hold to get them to fix it and switch back to direct deposit. The whole system is a dumpster fire 🔥

•Same thing happened to me! It's like they deliberately try to make it harder to get the money you're entitled to.

Unpopular opinion maybe but the debit card isn't that bad?? I got tired of fighting with the direct deposit system so I just use the card now. It comes pretty quick (mine took 6 days) and you can transfer the money to your bank account through their portal. Just another option if direct deposit is being a pain.

•The fees on those cards are ridiculous though. And god forbid you lose it, getting a replacement is a nightmare!

•Yeah the fees do suck, that's true. I just transfer everything off right away to avoid most of them.

•I had my card info stolen last year and it was HELL getting it sorted out. Never again! Direct deposit all the way.

anyone else notice how the system always seems to "glitch" in their favor and never in ours? 🤔

•FACTS. When they owe you money there's always a "system error" but when they think you owe THEM, everything works perfectly 💅

•my conspiracy theory is they do this on purpose so people miss out on benefits they're entitled to

Called the ny unemployment people yesterday about this exact thing. The lady told me the direct deposit info does NOT carry over when you file a new claim for security reasons. You definitely need to go in and set it up again. She also said to check it even if you think you already did it because sometimes the system doesn't save it properly.Hope this helps.

•Thank you for sharing! Did you have to wait long to talk to someone? I've been calling for two days with no luck.

•Took me like 3 hours of constant redialing. Total nightmare. Try early in the morning right when they open.

pro tip: screenshot EVERYTHING when you update your direct deposit. time, date, confirmation numbers, the works. NY unemployment has "lost" my banking info twice and tried to blame me for it. having those screenshots saved me both times.

For what its worth, my roommate had this same issue last week and ended up using claimyr.com to get connected to someone. He said it saved him days of frustration and the agent he talked to was actually helpful (shocker I know lol). I think I'm gonna try it myself because I'm having issues with backpay that I cant fix online.

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•No catch, it's just a service that calls and waits on hold so you don't have to. When they get someone they connect you. My roommate said he was skeptical too but it worked.

•Hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

•It's just a calling service, they don't ask for any personal info or anything. They literally just get an agent on the line for you. I was in the room when my roommate got his call connected and watched him get his issue fixed.

the answer is YES you need to reenter your direct deposit info BUT also be aware there's a glitch where even if you do that, it might still default to the debit card. I updated my banking info correctly last month and still had to call because they tried to send me a card anyway. Make sure you check your payment method status a day after you update it to confirm it actually saved.

Can confirm - had to re-enter all my direct deposit info with my new claim. Ridiculous but thats how it works. Also make sure you check that the last 4 digits of your account number showing in the system match your actual account after you enter it. The website glitched on me and somehow transposed two numbers which caused my payment to bounce back!

•Just checked and thankfully mine seems correct. Weird that the system only shows the last 4 digits tho!

Just went through this exact same thing when I filed my new claim in January! You definitely have to re-enter your direct deposit info - it doesn't carry over from your previous claim. I made the mistake of assuming it would transfer automatically and almost missed my first payment because of it. Go into your NY.gov unemployment account and look for the payment method section. Make sure you update it BEFORE your first payment is scheduled to be released. Also double-check that it actually saved properly because I've heard from multiple people that the system sometimes glitches and doesn't save the changes. If you're having trouble getting through on the phone to fix any issues, I've seen people mention using services like claimyr to get connected faster, though I haven't tried it myself. Good luck getting your payments sorted out before rent is due!
