Can't verify NY unemployment identity online - phone verification possible?
I've been trying to verify my identity for my NY unemployment claim for the past 3 days and the online system keeps giving me errors. Every time I upload my documents and click submit, it either freezes or says "system temporarily unavailable." Has anyone been able to verify their identity over the phone instead? The FAQ says something about phone verification but doesn't explain how to request it. Getting desperate since my benefits are on hold until this is resolved!

•Did you ever get through? I've been calling the main number and just get the automated message saying high call volume.

Yes, you can verify over the phone, but you need to specifically request an identity verification call. Don't call the main number - that won't work. Here's what I did last month: 1. Call the Claims Support line at 888-209-8124 2. When prompted, press 1 for English, then press 2 for "existing claim" 3. Then press 4 for "other questions about your claim" 4. When they ask for your PIN, enter it and wait 5. Specifically tell the representative you need identity verification and the online system isn't working Be prepared with your ID documents, SSN, and claim info. The agent will ask specific questions to verify your identity. Good luck!

•Thank you! This is super helpful. I'll try these exact steps tomorrow morning. Did they resolve it in one call for you or did you have to wait for follow-up?

•They resolved mine in one call, but I had to wait on hold for about 45 minutes before speaking to someone. The actual verification only took about 10 minutes once I got through.

I had this problem too and called for 2 WEEKS straight without getting through!!! The verification system is seriously broken and they don't have enough staff. I'm losing my mind because my claim is pending and I have bills due next week. Has anyone found a way to actually reach a human being?? I'm desperate at this point.

•I know this is frustrating. I was in the same boat last month. After failing with the regular number, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of calling for days. They have a demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE When you get through, immediately ask for the identity verification department. Regular agents will just tell you to try online again, but the ID verification specialists can actually help.

•Omg thank you! I never heard of that service before but I'm willing to try ANYTHING at this point. Going to check out that video right now. Did they actually solve your verification problem when you got through?

LOL everyone saying "just call" like thats some magical solution. The NYSDOL phone system is a JOKE! I tried calling 37 times last week (yes i counted) and never once got through to a human. The whole system is designed to make us give up. The phone verification DOES exist but good luck actually getting it. They should just fix their garbage website instead of making us jump through hoops.

I've been working unemployment claims for a few years now. Here's what most people don't know: the identity verification issues are usually caused by a mismatch between your application info and your ID documents. Common problems include: - Name format differences (like using a nickname on one form but full name on another) - Address mismatches (even small differences like "Street" vs "St") - Document expiration issues - Image quality problems with uploaded documents Before spending hours on the phone, double-check all your info matches exactly. About 70% of verification problems are from small data mismatches.

•I double checked everything and my info matches exactly on all documents. My driver's license is current, my address matches what's in the system, and I've used clear, high-quality scans. The system just freezes at the final submission step every time. That's why I'm trying to see if phone verification is possible.

•In that case, you definitely need the phone verification. Just be persistent with calling. The best times are Tuesday-Thursday between 8:00-8:30am or 4:30-5:00pm when call volume tends to be slightly lower.

I went through this exact situation in February. After trying the online verification 20+ times, I finally got through on the phone and had my identity verified in about 15 minutes. The key is getting to the right department. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to bypass the busy signals after wasting days trying to call myself. They got me connected within 30 minutes. Their system basically keeps dialing for you until it gets through. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE When you get through, immediately say "I need to speak with identity verification because the online system isn't working." Don't let them transfer you to general claims or technical support.

•Thanks for the detailed advice. I'll check out that service - at this point I'm willing to try anything since I'm already behind on rent waiting for this to clear up. Do you remember if you needed any specific documents ready when they finally connected you?

•Yes! Have your driver's license/state ID, Social Security card, and a piece of mail showing your current address (like a utility bill). They asked me verification questions about previous employers and addresses too, so be ready for that.

Update from my earlier comment: I just checked the NYSDOL website and they've added a new section about ID verification issues. If the online system fails 3 times, you're now automatically put in the queue for a callback from the identity verification team. The callback can take 5-7 business days, but at least you don't have to keep calling. You can check if you're in the callback queue by logging into your account and looking for a message saying "Identity Verification Pending" on your dashboard.

•Oh that's really helpful! I just checked and do see that message on my dashboard. I guess I'll wait for the callback then. Thanks for the update!

•Are you serious?? They're still optimizing for EXPLORER in 2025??? This is exactly why the whole system is broken. I'm not even sure my computer can run Explorer anymore lol
