Can I apply for ny unemployment again? Confused about reapplying
I keep seeing people around me getting unemployment checks again. Is ny unemployment accepting new applications? I lost my restaurant job about two months ago and haven't been able to find anything steady since. When I tried to check online, the system seemed really confusing. Do I just submit a regular application or is there something special I need to do? Not sure if the rules changed or if I'm missing something obvious. Any help would be appreciated because my savings are getting really low and rent is coming up soon.

Yes, NY unemployment is still accepting applications. There's no special program, just the regular unemployment insurance. You can apply online through the NYSDOL website or by phone. Make sure you have your employment history, social security number, and ID ready. You'll need to certify weekly once approved. Good luck!

•Thanks for confirming! Do you know how long it typically takes to start receiving benefits after applying?

•It can take 2-4 weeks for the first payment, but they backpay from when you first applied if approved. The system gets backed up sometimes tho.

•lol 2-4 weeks in a perfect world maybe. took me 8 weeks last time and I had to call them like 50 times 🤮

I was in the same situation last month! Couldn't get through on the phone and my application was stuck in limbo for weeks. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback with an actual human from unemployment who fixed everything. Talking to an agent got my benefits unlocked within days! Check out their video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•It worked for me! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for weeks. The callback came in about 2 hours and the agent fixed my claim issues right away.

•Honestly I felt the same way but after spending hours on hold myself I figured it was worth a shot. Got my first payment 3 days after talking to the rep they connected me with.

Regular unemployment is always available regardless of pandemics or whatever. The media just doesn't talk about it unless there's some special program. Apply ASAP cuz they don't backdate to when you lost work, only to when you apply!!

People aren't "collecting again" - the normal unemployment system never went away. What ended was the extra federal $$ and the extended weeks. Now it's just back to regular NY unemployment with the normal requirements and weekly benefit amount based on your past earnings.

•That makes so much more sense! I think I got confused because a few years back there was all that extra money and special programs.

I've been working with NY unemployment for years as an advocate, and here's what you need to know: The regular unemployment insurance (UI) system is ALWAYS running. It didn't go away after the pandemic programs ended. What changed is: - The federal supplements ($300/600 extra per week) ended - Extended benefit weeks ended - Work search requirements came back fully - Some pandemic eligibility expansions ended To apply now: 1. Go to labor.ny.gov and create/log into your account 2. Complete the full application with ALL employment history for the past 18 months 3. Submit and wait for monetary determination (shows potential weekly amount) 4. You'll be told if an interview is needed 5. Once approved, certify WEEKLY every Sunday 6. Document at least 3 work search activities each week If your application gets stuck or you face issues (which happens a lot), I'd recommend using Claimyr.com to get connected to an agent. The unemployment phone lines are absolutely overwhelmed, and this service saved me hours of frustration when helping clients. Remember: apply ASAP - benefits only start from application date, not job loss date!

•wait what's the diff between regular UI and what was happening during the pandemic?

•During pandemic: higher payments, fewer requirements, special programs for self-employed people, and much longer benefit periods. Now we're back to standard UI rules and payment amounts.

Make sure you have a working phone number on your application! They randomly call for interviews and if you miss it, your claim gets delayed for weeks. Ask me how i know 😭

Just applied last month after getting laid off. The website is confusing AF but just push through all the questions. Took about 3 weeks to get my first payment BUT only because I had worked in another state recently. If all your work was in NY should be faster.

They don't make this clear on the website, but you need to do AT LEAST 3 job search activities EVERY WEEK and document them. If they audit you and you cant prove youve been looking for work, they'll make you pay everything back. found that out the hard way 💯

•What counts as job search activities? Is applying to jobs enough?

•Applying to jobs counts, also going to job fairs, having interviews, using NYS job bank, submitting resumes, and networking for employment opportunities. Keep a detailed log!

be careful answering their questions. one wrong answer and u end up in adjudication hell for months. i answered a question wrong by accident and didnt get paid for 11 WEEKS until I could talk to someone 👀

•I said I wasn't available for work for one day because I had a doctors appointment. BIG MISTAKE. they want you available 7 days a week apparently 🤡

u kno what ticks me off - if u apply for a job and they dont hire u they NEVER tell u why but if ur unemployment claim gets denied they make u wait 8 weeks to find out some stupid reason 😡😡

There's no stupid questions when it comes to dealing with NY unemployment. The whole system is designed to be confusing so people give up. Just apply and be prepared to wait and jump through hoops.

•💯 this right here. They make it confusing on purpose hoping people will just give up

•That's honestly how it feels. The website seems intentionally difficult to navigate.

Pro tip: when you certify weekly, do it early Sunday morning. The website often crashes Sunday night when everyone tries to do it at once.

•OMG THIS. I learned the hard way when I couldn't certify and had to wait another week for that payment 😩

if u get approved make SURE u certify every single week even if ur payment is pending. if u miss a week u gotta call them to fix it and good luck with that hellscape
