I struggled with getting through to NYS Department of Labor for weeks trying to get clarification on my voluntary quit determination. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to actually reach a real person who could explain my options. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Worth checking out if you can't get through their regular phone lines.
wait so you CAN get unemployment if you quit?? i thought that was impossible. my job has been cutting everyone's hours too but i assumed i was stuck there
Yes, but it's not automatic. You need to meet specific criteria for 'good cause' and the burden of proof is on you. Significant reduction in hours or changes to working conditions can qualify, but you typically need to show you tried to resolve it with your employer first and that a reasonable person would have quit under those circumstances.
The whole system is broken. I've been waiting 9 weeks for my determination and they won't tell me ANYTHING. Meanwhile bills keep coming and they act like we don't exist. NYS Department of Labor is completely overwhelmed but won't admit it.
The NYS Department of Labor system is so confusing with all these calculations! I still don't understand why my benefit amount was lower than I expected even though I made good money.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to verify your benefit continuation dates, I used claimyr.com a few weeks ago when I needed to speak with an agent about my claim status. They have this video demo that shows exactly how it works: https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. Saved me hours of trying to call myself. Getting official documentation about your benefit timeline might help with the mortgage application.

•Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•No it's legit. They basically get you connected to an actual NYS Department of Labor agent instead of you sitting on hold forever. I was skeptical too but it worked for me.

Have you looked into first-time homebuyer programs? Some of them have different income requirements. Also check with credit unions - they're sometimes more flexible than big banks about unconventional income situations.
