without seeing the specific options its hard to say but incorrect statements usually involve misunderstanding about partial unemployment benefits or thinking you cant work ANY hours while collecting
The NYS Department of Labor system is so confusing with all these rules! I've been trying to figure out if working part-time affects my benefits and every website seems to say something different. Good luck with your exam though!
THIS!! The whole unemployment system treats us like we're lazy or trying to scam the system when most of us just want to work and pay our bills. The job search requirements are reasonable but acting like unemployment is a personal moral failing is BS.
The research is pretty clear that unemployment has significant social and economic causes beyond individual factors. Things like geographic job mismatches, skills gaps created by technological change, and cyclical economic downturns all contribute. The NYS Department of Labor's job search requirements are about maintaining work-seeking behavior, not because unemployment is inherently a personal choice.
Just make sure you file your claim as soon as possible after you're terminated! You can't backdate unemployment benefits in New York, so every week you wait is money you're losing. Even if you think your employer might contest it, file anyway - you can always appeal if they deny your initial claim.
The system is broken regardless of who's in office! I've been waiting 2 months for my appeal hearing and they keep rescheduling. NYS Department of Labor doesn't care about us regular people trying to survive.

honestly the whole unemployment system is designed to discourage people from applying. they make the qualifications confusing on purpose so fewer people will file claims. but if you lost hours through no fault of your own you should apply regardless

Quick question - do you still qualify if you quit your job? My manager has been making my life miserable and I'm thinking about leaving but don't want to lose out on benefits.

•Generally no, quitting disqualifies you unless you can prove you had 'good cause' like unsafe working conditions or harassment. The burden of proof is on you to show the situation was so bad that a reasonable person would have quit. It's much harder to get approved compared to being laid off or having hours reduced.
