Don't get your hopes up too high. The whole system is designed to deny as many people as possible. They'll probably say your attendance issues were willful misconduct and deny your claim. Then you'll have to appeal and wait months for a hearing. It's all a joke.
Your boyfriend doing DoorDash would actually be counted as employed in the statistics, even if it's not sustainable income. The unemployment rate measures whether people have any work, not whether they have adequate work or work in their field. That's why the underemployment rate and labor force participation rate give a more complete picture of job market health.
I went through something similar when I was trying to understand why I wasn't eligible for extended benefits. The counselor at the workforce center explained that actual unemployment includes people actively searching, but there are also discouraged workers who aren't counted. Plus people working reduced hours, temporary work, or jobs way below their skill level. The 3.8% is just one piece of a bigger puzzle.
The whole system is rigged anyway. They say unemployment goes down but half the people just stop looking for work or take crappy part-time jobs that don't pay enough to live on. The real unemployment rate is way higher than what they report. Companies just want cheap labor now.
Been there friend. What really helped me was treating job searching like a full time job itself. Set schedule, track everything (helps with your weekly NYS Department of Labor reporting anyway), take breaks so you don't burn out. Also don't neglect your mental health during this time - unemployment can really mess with your head even when you're getting benefits.
The system is rigged anyway. I've been jumping through hoops for NYS Department of Labor for months, doing their stupid job search requirements, and still nothing. Companies ghost you after interviews, the whole thing is a joke. At least the unemployment benefits keep coming but it's not enough to live on.

just went through this myself actually. got terminated in december and filed right away. took about 3 weeks for them to approve my claim but i did get it. employer tried to say it was misconduct but i had documentation showing it was really about budget cuts. definitely fight it if they deny you

My cousin got fired and they told him he couldn't get unemployment but I think he was wrong about that. Sounds like maybe he just didn't fight it or something?

•It's possible he was initially denied but didn't appeal the decision. Many people don't realize they have the right to appeal a denial, and sometimes the initial determination gets overturned on appeal.
