NYS Department of Labor - which group of women has faced the highest rates of unemployment - need data for appeal
I'm working on an appeal for my unemployment claim and need to understand employment statistics for different groups of women in New York State. My lawyer says this could be relevant to my case since I was laid off from a position where they seemed to target certain demographics. Does anyone know which group of women has faced the highest rates of unemployment according to NYS Department of Labor data? I've been searching their website but can't find breakdown by demographics. This is for a discrimination case related to my UI claim denial.

From what I've seen in NYS Department of Labor reports, African American women typically face higher unemployment rates than other demographic groups. The most recent data I found showed they had nearly double the unemployment rate compared to white women in NY. You might want to check the Bureau of Labor Statistics breakdown for New York specifically since NYS Department of Labor sometimes references their data.

•Thank you! Do you know if NYS Department of Labor tracks this data separately or if they just use federal numbers? My attorney needs state-specific information for the appeal hearing.

You should be able to request detailed employment statistics directly from NYS Department of Labor for your legal case. I had to do something similar when I was fighting a disqualification. They have a research division that can provide demographic breakdowns that aren't published on their main website. Call their main number and ask to be transferred to Labor Market Information.

•Good point about calling them directly. Though getting through to NYS Department of Labor on the phone is nearly impossible these days. I've been trying for weeks about my own claim status.

•If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor by phone, you might want to check out claimyr.com - they help people get through to unemployment agents. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I used them when I couldn't get answers about my adjudication process and it actually worked.

This is really important data to have. In my experience working with unemployment cases, women of color, especially Black women and Latinas, face disproportionately high unemployment rates in NY. The intersectionality of race and gender creates additional barriers. NYS Department of Labor should have this broken down in their annual reports, but you might need to dig through several years of data to establish patterns for your case.

•That makes sense about the intersectionality aspect. I'll look for the annual reports. Do you know if NYS Department of Labor publishes these quarterly or just annually?

•I understand the frustration, but NYS Department of Labor does actually maintain pretty detailed demographic data. It's required for federal reporting. The challenge is usually accessing it in a format that's useful for individual cases.
