NYS Department of Labor unemployment rate statistics - what is the rate of unemployment today in NY?
I'm trying to understand the current unemployment situation in New York state for a research project I'm working on. Does anyone know what is the rate of unemployment today according to NYS Department of Labor? I've been looking through their website but can't find the most recent numbers. Also wondering if this affects how long it takes to process new UI claims since I might need to file soon. My company has been talking about layoffs and I want to be prepared.

According to the latest NYS Department of Labor statistics I saw, New York's unemployment rate is around 4.2% as of the most recent monthly report. You can find the official numbers on the NYS Department of Labor website under their labor statistics section. The rate fluctuates monthly but has been relatively stable. Higher unemployment rates don't necessarily mean longer processing times for individual claims, but they can mean higher call volumes when you need to reach someone.

•Thanks! That's really helpful. Do you know if that 4.2% is seasonal adjusted or not? And yeah I'm worried about the call volume thing since I've heard horror stories about trying to reach NYS Department of Labor by phone.

just checked and the number changes every month so what you see today might be different next week. last i looked it was somewhere between 4-5% but honestly the rate doesn't really matter for your individual claim processing

The unemployment rate definitely affects the overall system load. When I filed my claim last year during a period when rates were higher, it took weeks longer than normal for adjudication. NYS Department of Labor gets overwhelmed when more people are filing. If you're planning ahead for a potential layoff, I'd recommend getting familiar with the my.ny.gov system now and having all your employment documentation ready. That way if you do need to file, you can get through the initial application quickly.

•That's smart advice about preparing ahead of time. What kind of documentation should I gather now while I still have access to everything at work?

•Get copies of your pay stubs for the last 18 months, your W-2s, and any employment contracts. Also write down exact dates of employment and your supervisor's contact info. If there are any performance reviews or emails about the layoff situation, save those too in case you need them for appeals later.

I've been trying to get through to NYS Department of Labor for three days to ask about my claim status and the phone system is completely jammed. Someone told me about this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you through to a real person at NYS Department of Labor without waiting on hold forever. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Might be worth checking out if you end up needing to call them about anything.

•never heard of that but anything is better than sitting on hold for 4 hours just to get disconnected

Just wanted to add that the unemployment rate you see in the news is usually for the whole state, but it varies a lot by region. NYC area tends to be different from upstate. NYS Department of Labor publishes regional breakdowns too if you need more specific data for your research.
