NYS Department of Labor unemployment rate changes - what was unemployment when trump left office?
I'm trying to understand the unemployment situation better for a research project I'm doing. Does anyone know what the unemployment rate was when Trump left office in January 2021? I'm specifically interested in New York state numbers if possible. I've been dealing with my own unemployment claim lately and it got me curious about the bigger picture of unemployment trends. My claim has been in adjudication for weeks and I'm wondering if high unemployment rates affect processing times at NYS Department of Labor.

From what I remember, the national unemployment rate was around 6.3% when Trump left office in January 2021. New York's rate was higher, I think around 8-9% at that time. The pandemic really hit hard in 2020 and we were still recovering. Processing times at NYS Department of Labor were definitely longer during that period because of the massive volume of claims.

•That makes sense why my claim is taking so long then. Do you know if NYS Department of Labor still has delays from that backlog?

If you're having trouble with your adjudication, I had success using Claimyr to get through to a NYS Department of Labor agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I was stuck in adjudication for 5 weeks and got it resolved within days of talking to an actual person. Way better than trying to call NYS Department of Labor directly and getting hung up on.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll check that out. Getting through to NYS Department of Labor has been impossible.

The unemployment rate was definitely high but I think it's important to remember that NYS Department of Labor was also dealing with unprecedented claim volumes. My brother works there and said they were completely overwhelmed. The systems weren't designed for that many people filing at once.

Ugh don't even get me started on NYS Department of Labor processing times!! I filed in late 2020 and didn't see a dime until March 2021. The whole system was a mess.
