I've been trying to reach someone at NYS Department of Labor about getting more detailed unemployment data for my research project but their phone lines are always busy. Has anyone had luck getting through to their statistics department? I need clarification on some of the seasonal adjustments they make to the numbers.
I had the same problem trying to reach NYS Department of Labor agents for different reasons. Someone mentioned a service called Claimyr that helps you get through to unemployment offices - they have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need to actually speak with someone there.
Just to add some detail - the employer tax rates in NY range from 0.6% to 9.9% of taxable wages depending on the employer's experience rating. New employers start at around 4.1%. The more claims filed by former employees, the higher the rate goes. So companies have incentive to avoid unnecessary layoffs since it directly impacts their costs.
JUST A WARNING - they changed some of the rules recently and you HAVE to do job searches every week now. its not just getting the money anymore, you gotta prove youre looking for work or they'll cut you off. make sure you keep track of everything!!!
I had such a hard time getting through to NYS Department of Labor to check my benefit calculation when I filed. Kept getting busy signals for weeks. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Really saved me the headache of calling hundreds of times.
The whole system is so confusing! Why can't they just tell you upfront what you'll get instead of making you calculate base periods and quarters?? I'm still waiting for my adjudication to finish after 3 weeks

My timeline was: Filed on Tuesday, approved Friday, filed first weekly claim Sunday, got my debit card the following Wednesday, first payment hit Thursday. So about 9 days total but that was without any complications. Your mileage may vary depending on if NYS Department of Labor needs to verify anything with your employer.
