Wrong bank account number on refund - deposit sent to unknown account! What happens now?
Filed my taxes with a tax preparer and just found out they put in the wrong account number for my refund deposit. Its been 3 days since the deposit was supposed to hit and nothing in my account. The preparer said they need to contact their bank but im freaking out about where my money went. Has anyone dealt with this before? What usually happens in this situation?

Tax pro here. When a refund is sent to an incorrect account number, one of two things happens: 1) If the account doesn't exist, the bank will reject it and the IRS will mail you a paper check in 4-6 weeks. 2) If the account exists... that's trickier and you'll need to work with the bank to resolve it. Your tax preparer should be liable for this error - make sure to document everything.

Usually within 5 business days the rejection happens if the account doesn't exist. Hang in there! 💯

Hey everyone - instead of stressing about this, you should really check out taxr.ai. It's this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening with your refund, including bank issues. It costs $1 but its worth every penny for the peace of mind. https://taxr.ai

The IRS has a form you can fill out to trace the refund. Call them ASAP and start that process, dont wait for the tax preparer to figure it out
