IRS deposited my 2021 refund in wrong account, been fighting since 2023 to resolve. Help!

I'm having a nightmare with my 2021 tax refund. It was deposited into the wrong account and I've been trying to sort this out since 2023. I've talked to the IRS multiple times, they said they contacted the bank where the deposit went but got no response. Then they said they'd pass my claim to the fiscal department, but when I called them, they said the IRS never sent anything over. I'm at my wits end here. Has anyone dealt with something similar or have any advice on how to get this resolved?

Ugh, that sounds like a total nightmare! I had a similar issue a few years back, but not quite as bad. Here's what worked for me: 1. Document everything: Keep a log of all your calls, who you spoke to, and what was said. 2. Be persistent: Call regularly and ask for updates. 3. Escalate: Ask to speak with a supervisor or manager. 4. Consider contacting your local Taxpayer Advocate Service office. They can sometimes help with these tricky situations. 5. As a last resort, reach out to your congressional representative. They often have staff dedicated to helping constituents with federal issues. Hang in there, OP! The IRS can be a real pain to deal with, but persistence usually pays off eventually.

Thanks for the advice! I've been keeping a log, but I haven't tried the Taxpayer Advocate Service yet. I'll give that a shot. How long did it take for your issue to get resolved?

It took about 3 months from when I first contacted the Taxpayer Advocate Service. Not quick, but way faster than dealing with the IRS directly!

The Taxpayer Advocate Service is legit. They helped me out with a complicated audit situation last year. Definitely worth a try!

Hey now, let's not be too harsh. The IRS is understaffed and overworked. They're doing their best with limited resources.

I feel your pain, OP. I've been in the same boat with a messed up refund before. Have you tried calling the Taxpayer Advocate Service? They can sometimes cut through the red tape when you're getting the runaround.

This might sound crazy, but I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it's legit. I was desperate and gave it a shot. Saved me hours of hold time.

Has anyone else tried this? I'm tempted but $20 is a lot if it doesn't work.

@profile 9 I get it, I was hesitant too. But think about how much your time is worth. For me, not having to sit on hold for hours was totally worth it.

Have you considered that maybe the IRS is actually run by a group of highly trained squirrels? It would explain a lot... šŸæļøšŸæļøšŸæļø

This is why I always choose to get a paper check for my refund. Yeah, it takes longer, but at least I know where it's going. Sorry you're dealing with this mess, OP.

Thats actually a really good point. I might switch to paper checks after this fiasco.

Hey OP, former IRS employee here. Your situation sounds like a real headache. Here's what I'd recommend: 1. File Form 3911 (Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund) if you haven't already. This formally reports the missing refund. 2. Request a trace on the refund. The IRS can track where the money went. 3. If the bank won't cooperate, the IRS can initiate a formal bank inquiry. 4. Keep calling, but always ask for a case number or reference number for your inquiries. 5. If you're not getting anywhere, definitely contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed advice! I'll definitely file that Form 3911 right away. Quick question - how long does a trace usually take?

A trace typically takes about 6-8 weeks, but it can vary. Make sure to follow up if you don't hear anything after 2 months.
