DDD was 3/26 but Refund Still Not in My Account - Who to Contact?

My tax refund situation is frustrating me and I need advice: • My Direct Deposit Date (DDD) was clearly marked as 3/26/2024 on my transcript • IRS website says my refund was sent but NOTHING has appeared in my account • It's been 5 days now with no deposit • I've checked all my accounts multiple times to make sure I didn't miss it • I need this refund to cover some medical equipment for my mom Is anyone else experiencing delays with their direct deposits? Who's the right person/department to contact about this? I'm starting to wonder if there's some kind of system-wide issue happening.

This happens way more often than it should. Similar to when the IRS claimed they mailed my check last year but it took 3 weeks to arrive. If your banking info was correct on your return, you need to wait 5 business days after the DDD before taking action. Banks sometimes hold funds, especially if it's a larger amount. If nothing shows by April 2nd, you'll need to contact the IRS directly to start a payment trace.

Would it make a difference if the account was a prepaid card rather than a traditional bank account? Some of those have different processing times, don't they?

Thank you for the precise timeline. I've been tracking exactly 3 different refunds this year (mine, my partner's, and my mother's), and all had different processing patterns. One took exactly 4 business days after the DDD, one took 2 days, and one was same-day. The IRS does seem to have a 5-day grace period before they'll take action.

Double check your transcript again. Look for code 846. Verify the account number. It might be different than expected. Sometimes refunds go to tax preparer accounts first. Did you use a preparation service? They might have your money.

What's the difference between code 846 and the actual DDD? Are there any other transcript codes that would indicate a redirect of funds or a potential offset that the OP should be looking for?

I've seen several cases where people thought they were getting direct deposit but the IRS decided to mail a check instead, possibly due to security measures. It might be worth checking your mailbox regularly for the next week or so, just in case they changed the delivery method without notification.

OMG I had the EXACT same issue last month! DDD came and went w/ no $$$. Called IRS but couldn't get thru after trying for 2 days straight. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got connected to an agent in like 15 mins. Turns out they had sent it but there was a routing # issue they fixed right away. So relieved to have it sorted! Def worth the fee to not waste hours on hold.

I experienced this issue during the 2023 tax season. According to IRS Publication 5344, the IRS allows financial institutions up to 5 business days to process and post refund deposits. If your refund exceeds $10,000, additional fraud prevention measures may extend this timeline per Internal Revenue Manual 21.4.1. In my case, the refund appeared on day 4 with no notification. I recommend documenting all dates and checking both your primary and savings accounts, as routing errors do occur.

Have you verified the account and routing numbers on your actual tax return? I had a DDD of February 12th, 2024 and realized on February 15th that I had transposed two digits in my account number. The bank rejected the deposit on February 16th, and the IRS automatically converted it to a paper check that arrived on March 4th. You might want to prepare for a much longer wait if there was any error in your banking details.

I just went through this and got it resolved! My refund was scheduled for March 14th but didn't show up. I called my bank first to see if they were holding it - they weren't. Then I pulled my transcript again and confirmed the last 4 digits of the account matched mine. Finally called IRS on March 21st, and they found that my refund had been returned due to a name mismatch (my tax return name didn't exactly match my bank account name). They reissued it that day and I got it March 25th. Stay persistent!
