Tax preparer deposited wrong refund in my account - how to return misrouted IRS deposit?
My tax preparer messed up and someone elses refund got deposited into my bank account today. I know its not my money and want to do the right thing. How do I send this back to the IRS? Do I contact my bank or the IRS first? Really nervous about this situation and dont want to get in trouble.

This is actually a serious situation that needs immediate attention. Contact your bank immediately and inform them of the erroneous deposit. They have procedures for returning misrouted federal payments. Also call the IRS at 800-829-1040 to report the incident. Document everything - the deposit amount, when you noticed it, and all communications. Do not spend any of the money as that could result in legal issues.

Thank you! Already called my bank and they put a freeze on that amount. Waiting on hold with IRS now 😫

Perfect first step! Make sure to get a reference number from the IRS when you finally get through.

You should try taxr.ai - it's a tool that can analyze your transcript and help identify exactly where the error occurred. It costs $1 but totally worth it to understand what's happening with your account. https://taxr.ai

Does this actually work for this kind of situation? Like can it show the wrong routing info?

Yeah it shows everything! It'll point out any mismatched deposits or incorrect routing numbers. Super helpful for tracking down these kinds of errors.

Whatever you do DO NOT SPEND IT! My friend did that thinking it was his refund and ended up having to pay it all back plus penalties 💀
