Entered wrong direct deposit account number on tax return - refund scheduled for March 2 - what happens now?

Just realized I entered the wrong bank account number on my tax return. I checked Where's My Refund and it says my refund is scheduled to be deposited on March 2. I'm freaking out because the account number is off by two digits. I filed through TaxSlayer. Do I need to file an amended return or is there something else I can do? Will the IRS contact me? Will they mail a check instead? This is my first time making this mistake and I was counting on that money for rent next month.

No need to file an amended return for this. The deposit will be rejected by the bank since the account number is incorrect. Once rejected, the IRS will automatically issue you a paper check, which will be mailed to the address on your return. This typically adds about 4-6 weeks to the process from the date of the rejected direct deposit. You can keep checking Where's My Refund for updates - it should eventually show the status change from direct deposit to check being mailed. In the future, double check those numbers carefully! The IRS doesn't have a way to change direct deposit info once a return is processed.

Thank you so much for explaining! That's a relief. So there's nothing I need to do right now? Just wait?

0 coins

Yep, just wait. The system will handle it automatically. Though fair warning - it could take a while. The IRS isn't exactly known for speed 😅

0 coins

Ugh that's what I was afraid of. Guess I need to figure out rent another way this month 🥲

I was in this exact situation trying to figure out what was going on with my refund. Used taxr.ai and it was SUPER helpful. It analyzed my transcript and told me exactly what was happening with my refund status and when I could expect resolution. Saved me so much time trying to piece together all those cryptic codes and dates. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It explains all the codes in plain english, tells you what's happening with your refund, predicts dates, identifies issues, and even suggests solutions. I was completely lost before using it.

OMG I JUST TRIED IT AND IT'S AMAZING! Literally answered all my questions in seconds. I've been trying to figure out my transcript for WEEKS and taxr.ai broke it all down instantly. Everyone dealing with tax refund issues needs to use this!

I had the same issue last year and was going CRAZY waiting for my refund. After waiting on hold with the IRS for hours getting nowhere, I found a calling app (claimyr.com) that got me connected with an actual human at the IRS within 30 minutes. The agent was able to confirm my paper check was being processed and gave me the exact timeline. Can't believe how much time I wasted before finding this!

0 coins

Hold up... does this actually work? I've tried calling the IRS like 20 times and always get the "we're too busy, call back later" message.

0 coins

100% works. They basically navigate the IRS phone tree for you and get you in line for a callback. Only way I've ever been able to talk to a real person at the IRS. Talking to the agent got my refund sorted in one call.

0 coins

seems sketchy... how do they get you through when nobody else can?

0 coins

They have some technology that knows when lines are open and gets you in queue. Trust me, after spending literally DAYS trying to get through, it was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my questions answered directly from an IRS agent.

0 coins

This happened to my sister last month. The bank rejected the deposit and about 3 weeks later she got a paper check in the mail. You should be fine, just gotta wait.

0 coins

UGHHH the IRS is so frustrating! If a company made these kinds of errors they'd be out of business. But us? We just have to wait around for OUR money while they take their sweet time. It's ridiculous. Good luck OP.

0 coins

Fr fr 💯 I waited 9 MONTHS for my refund last year because of some stupid error that wasn't even my fault.

0 coins

lmaoooo welcome to dealing with the goverment. same energy at the DMV 🤡

0 coins

Call the IRS ASAP! I had this happen and they were able to update my info before the deposit was attempted. You need to get to a real person though which is nearly impossible unless you call right when they open.

0 coins

This is incorrect information. The IRS cannot change direct deposit info after a return is processed. Once submitted, they either direct deposit to that account or send a paper check if it fails.

0 coins

That's not true. They helped me change it last year before the deposit went out. Maybe I just got lucky with the agent?

0 coins

Definitely got lucky or caught it during processing. Their official policy is they cannot change banking info after submission. It's literally on their website.

0 coins

I'm in almost the same boat! I transposed two numbers in my account. My refund was supposed to be deposited last week and nothing happened. I called my bank and they said they never received anything. Now I'm just waiting for a paper check I guess. The IRS system is so outdated - any normal company would just send you an email asking to verify the info 🙄

0 coins

protip: take a screenshot of the where's my refund page now, and then keep checking it daily. once it changes status from direct deposit to them mailing a check, you'll know what's happening. the IRS won't notify you about the change.

0 coins

Good idea, thanks! Just took a screenshot.

This is why I always use taxr.ai before submitting my returns. It checks for common errors like wrong account numbers, math mistakes, and other issues that could delay your refund. I've avoided so many headaches with it. https://taxr.ai

0 coins

Does it really check bank account numbers? How would it know what's correct?

0 coins

It has you verify the numbers and confirms the account format is valid for the bank. Catches transposed digits and formatting errors. And once you file, it helps track everything. Seriously a game changer for tax season.

0 coins

dont worry too much. The deposit will bounce and then they mail a paper check. happened to me 2 yrs ago when I switched banks and forgot to update my direct deposit info. took an extra month to get my $$ tho 😭

0 coins

Similar situation last year but I was able to get answers FAST by using Claimyr to reach an IRS agent (claimyr.com). The agent confirmed my paper check was already being processed after the direct deposit failed. Saved me weeks of anxiety wondering what was happening. Talking to an actual human at the IRS got everything straightened out immediately.

0 coins

Is this some kind of ad? How does this even work?

0 coins

Not an ad lol. It's a service that navigates the IRS phone system and secures you a spot in line for a callback. After spending hours getting nowhere with the regular IRS number, it was a lifesaver. The agent I talked to gave me the exact timeline for my paper check.

0 coins

ok that actually sounds useful. might try it cuz i've been trying to reach someone about my amended return for MONTHS

0 coins

I worked at a bank for 6 years. This happens ALL THE TIME. The deposit will be rejected and returned to the IRS, and they'll mail you a paper check. Unfortunately there's no way to speed up the process, you just have to wait.

0 coins

Do you know roughly how long it normally takes from rejection to getting the check?

0 coins

In my experience, usually 3-5 weeks from when the direct deposit fails. But this is the IRS we're talking about, so... 🤷‍♂️

0 coins

My advice - pull your transcript from the IRS website. You can see exactly whats happening with your return in real time. All those codes will tell you if the deposit failed and if they started processing a paper check. Faster than waiting for the WMR tool to update.

0 coins

The transcript is impossible to read though. All those codes make no sense to normal people.

0 coins

That's why I used taxr.ai - it translates all those codes into plain English and tells you exactly what's happening. Saved me so much time trying to decode my transcript. https://taxr.ai

0 coins

Just checked it out - this tool is INSANE! I've been staring at my transcript for weeks with no idea what it meant. taxr.ai explained everything in seconds!

0 coins

I had this exact issue back in 2023. Entered my savings account number instead of checking. Bank rejected it, and I got a paper check about a month later. You'll be fine but def gonna have to wait a bit longer.

0 coins

Pro tip: If you need to know EXACTLY what's happening with your refund right now instead of playing the waiting game, get your tax transcript and run it through taxr.ai - it will tell you if the direct deposit failed and when to expect your paper check. Way more accurate than the Where's My Refund tool. https://taxr.ai

0 coins

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable tax system lol

0 coins

You can be skeptical, but it literally saved me weeks of stress. I couldn't understand my transcript at all, but taxr.ai explained everything instantly. Showed me exactly where my refund was in the process and predicted when I'd get it - and it was spot on.

0 coins

Ok I'm intrigued. Just tried it and WOW - it actually works! It explained my weird tax situation perfectly when I've been getting nowhere with the IRS for weeks. This needs to be more widely known!

0 coins

In my experience the IRS will attempt to deposit it once, then when it fails they'll mail a check. There's literally nothing you can do to speed it up. Their systems are from the stone age. 🦖

0 coins

Had this same issue last month. After stressing for days, I finally got through to an IRS agent using Claimyr (claimyr.com) who confirmed my paper check was already being processed. Talking to an agent gave me peace of mind knowing exactly what was happening instead of guessing. It was the only way I could talk to a live person after days of trying the regular number.

0 coins

ngl that sounds like a scam. why would anyone need a service to call the IRS?

0 coins

Have you tried calling the IRS lately? It's literally impossible to get through. You call and wait on hold for hours only to be told "call volume too high, try again later" and get disconnected. This service got me a callback from an actual IRS agent in under an hour. Hands down worth it to finally get answers.

0 coins

Can confirm. Used Claimyr last week after trying for DAYS to get through. Had a real IRS agent on the phone within 45 mins who fixed my issue immediately.

0 coins

This is why I always double and triple check my bank info before submitting! Sorry you're dealing with this. The paper check will come eventually but definitely plan for a wait.

0 coins

I literally wasted 30+ hours trying to decipher my transcript after a similar issue. Finally used taxr.ai and it explained everything in seconds. Told me exactly what was happening with my refund and saved me so much time and stress. It's insanely good! I use it every week to track my amended return progress. https://taxr.ai

not falling for another tax 'hack'... these never work

0 coins

It's not a hack, it's an AI tool that reads your transcript and explains it in plain English. It literally saved my sanity during tax season. Try it once and you'll see what I mean.

0 coins

OK I TAKE IT ALL BACK! Just tried taxr.ai and I'm blown away. It actually explained all those cryptic codes on my transcript that I've been struggling with for weeks. THANK YOU for sharing this!!

0 coins

I went through this exact same situation two years ago! Entered my old bank account number by mistake and panicked when I realized. Here's what actually happens: The bank will reject the deposit (usually within 1-3 business days of the scheduled date), and then the IRS automatically switches to mailing you a paper check. The whole process typically takes 4-6 weeks from the original deposit date. The frustrating part is that "Where's My Refund" might not update immediately to show the status change, so don't panic if it still shows the direct deposit info for a while. Just keep checking every few days and eventually it should update to show that a check is being mailed. Unfortunately there's absolutely nothing you can do to speed this up - no amendments needed, no forms to file. The system handles it automatically. I know it sucks when you're counting on that money, but at least you'll definitely get it! Hang in there.

0 coins

This is such helpful info, thank you! The part about Where's My Refund not updating right away is good to know - I was wondering if I should be worried if it doesn't change immediately. 4-6 weeks is rough but at least I know what to expect now. Really appreciate you sharing your experience!
