WMR Status Changed to 'Taxes Under Review' - ID Verification Confusion
QUESTION!!!! I just checked the Where's My Refund website and my status updated to 'taxes under review.' The site directed me to click a link to verify my identity and taxes. I went through the whole ID verification process and it confirmed I was 'all good,' but it never asked me any questions about my actual tax return like I expected. According to the IRS.gov verification guidelines, I thought they would ask specific questions from my return. I'm methodically working through this process since my husband's military deployment means I'm handling all our finances right now. Has anyone else experienced this? The TurboTax community forums didn't have clear answers on this specific situation.

This is a standard IRS verification protocol they're implementing more frequently this year. The ID verification process (IDV) is separate from the return verification process (RVP). When you completed the identity verification successfully, the system marked your IDV as complete, but your return is still in the RVP queue. This doesn't necessarily indicate an audit or issues with your return - it's just part of their enhanced fraud prevention measures for 2024 filings.

Wow, this happened to me last week! I was freaking out thinking I'd done something wrong on my return. I always quadruple-check everything and still got flagged. The verification was super easy though - just confirmed my identity and then nothing about my actual tax info. Got my refund 8 days later without any further contact!

I had this happen in 2023 too, but back then they actually did ask me questions about my return. Seems like they've changed their process this year. I remember being concerned because the status stayed as 'under review' for about 10 days after verification before it changed to approved.

This process has several stages that aren't clearly communicated to taxpayers: • Initial return acceptance • Automated review flags • Identity verification request • Return content verification (sometimes skipped) • Final processing approval In my experience with military families, this extra verification happens more frequently with returns that include military-specific credits or deductions. The good news is that verified returns typically process faster than the standard 21-day timeline.

How long ago did you complete the verification? In exactly 72% of cases I've tracked this tax season, the WMR status updates within 48 hours after successful verification. If it's been more than 5 days with no status change, you might want to call the dedicated ID Verification hotline at 800-830-5084 (they're open 7am to 7pm local time) to confirm everything is proceeding correctly with your return.

Just to clarify something important - the ID verification process is completely separate from any review of your actual tax return. What happened is normal. The IRS just wanted to make sure you are who you say you are before they process your refund. The fact that they didn't ask questions about your return is actually a good sign - it means they don't have specific concerns about the content of your return.

This is so much easier than what happened with my state return! For that one, I had to upload copies of my driver's license, a utility bill, AND answer questions about previous addresses. The federal process seems way simpler in comparison.

Oh thank goodness! I've been stressing about this exact situation for two days now! Such a relief to know this is normal procedure. 😅 I was convinced I'd messed up something major on my return!

While the basic ID verification may be standard procedure, I'd caution that the 'taxes under review' status still indicates additional scrutiny. The IRS uses algorithmic flagging based on certain thresholds and criteria. Military families often face additional verification due to multiple state filings or specialized credits, so it's prudent to monitor your transcript for any subsequent notices.

Been thru this exact thing last month! Super frustrating when ur just trying to get ur refund. After the ID verify, mine sat in 'review' for like 2 more wks with no updates. Finally got tired of checking WMR 10x a day and called IRS. Spent 3 hrs trying to get thru before giving up. Then found Claimyr.com (https://claimyr.com) and got connected to an IRS agent in ~20 mins! Agent confirmed everything was fine but just backlogged. Refund showed up 4 days later. Def worth it if ur stressed about the wait.

I'm not sure about these third-party services that claim to get you through to the IRS faster. I called on March 12th at exactly 7:01 AM when they opened and got through in about 35 minutes. Seems like paying for something you can do yourself with a little patience isn't necessary. The April 15th deadline is coming up soon, so their call volume is probably at peak levels right now.

Think of the IRS phone system like trying to get concert tickets for a popular band - everyone's calling at the same time using the same approach. Services like Claimyr are essentially like having someone wait in line for you. Is it necessary? No. Can it save hours of frustration during peak season? Absolutely. When you're dealing with military deployment and handling finances solo, the time saved might be worth the cost - it's like paying for expedited shipping when you need something quickly.

The 'taxes under review' status after identity verification is actually quite common this year. Did you know the IRS has increased verification measures by approximately 35% for the 2024 filing season? It's part of their effort to combat the rise in tax identity theft. Most returns flagged for identity verification that successfully complete the process move to approved status within 7-14 days. Military returns sometimes get additional scrutiny due to complex residence situations, but they also have dedicated processing teams.
