WMR Shows 'Return Processing Delayed' - As Of Date 4/26 But Transcripts Still N/A?
WMR just updated to 'return processing delayed' after showing the first bar for weeks. Transcripts are still showing N/A for 2023. What's going on here? There has been an 'as of date' for 4/26 though. What exactly is that for? Is it just a generic date or does it actually mean something for my return? Filed and accepted 1/29 with H&R Block. Already got the advance they offered. Received my state refund on 2/9, so at least that's something. But where's my federal? Shouldn't it be processed by now?

The 'as of date' is basically the IRS's way of saying "we'll get back to you by this date... maybe." It's like when your friend says they'll call you back in 5 minutes and you're still waiting 3 hours later. š Seriously though, the 'as of date' is when your account is scheduled for its next automatic update in the IRS system. It doesn't necessarily mean your refund will be issued then. Given that you filed 1/29 and it's now showing a processing delay, you're likely caught in one of their verification processes. This is especially common with returns filed early in the season.

I've seen this happen before with early filers. When you say verification process, does that mean they're actually reviewing the return manually? Last year I had a similar message and it took an extra 3 weeks beyond the 'as of date' to get my refund.

I'm somewhat confused about the transcript showing N/A though. Doesn't that usually mean they haven't even begun processing? It seems, perhaps, that there might be a disconnect between the WMR tool and the actual transcript system, possibly?

This happened to me too! The IRS website says transcripts should update weekly but mine stayed N/A for over a month while WMR showed processing. I checked the IRS2Go app, the website, and even called. Everyone gave different answers! The online forums were more helpful than the actual IRS reps lol.

Have you checked for these common issues? ā¢ Did you claim any tax credits (EIC, CTC, etc.)? ā¢ Any unemployment income or gig work? ā¢ Did you have marketplace health insurance? ā¢ Any stimulus payments you didn't receive that you claimed? These can all trigger additional verification. Also, H&R Block's "advance" sometimes causes confusion in the IRS system because it's technically a loan against your expected refund, not your actual refund.

Thanks for these points. Aren't advances just another way for tax prep companies to make money off people who can't wait? They charge fees for something that's essentially just a short-term loan, don't they?

The IRS specifically flags returns with certain credits for additional review. I filed on January 28th with EITC. My return was held until February 15th due to PATH Act requirements. Then it went into manual review. I finally received my deposit on March 21st. The timeline is getting longer every year.

Did u have any ID verification? I got stuck in that last yr and it added like 2 months to my processing time. Total nightmare tbh.

Yes, I claimed the Child Tax Credit for my two kids. No unemployment or marketplace insurance though. I needed that advance from H&R Block for some car repairs I couldn't put off any longer, but now I'm worried that might be causing the delay! š« I'm getting really anxious about this because I have some bills coming due next month that I was counting on this refund for. Should I just keep waiting or is there something I should be doing?

You need to call the IRS. Don't wait. CTC claims are being reviewed carefully this year. I had the same issue. Called for three days straight. Never got through. Used Claimyr instead. Connected in 18 minutes. Agent confirmed my return was in manual review. Nothing wrong. Just backlogged. She estimated 6-8 more weeks. At least I knew what was happening. Worth the fee to stop worrying. Check them out: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Have you received any letters or notices from the IRS? Sometimes they send a letter requesting additional information but don't update the online systems right away. Also, did you check both account transcript and return transcript? Sometimes one will update before the other.

The N/A transcript with a processing delay message is a classic indicator of a CP05 review. This is an automatic compliance check where the IRS verifies income, withholding, and credits claimed. The cycle typically takes 45-60 days from filing date. Your 'as of date' of 4/26 aligns with this timeframe from your 1/29 submission.
