WMR Changed to Tax Topic 151 (Code 1242) After ID Verification - No 811 or 846 Code Yet
Verified my identity last Friday. WMR updated Wednesday. Changed from 'still processing' to 'being processed'. Good sign. Had 810 code previously. IRS sent 5747C letter for verification. Completed verification last Friday. Transcripts updated yesterday. Shows all credits. No 811 reversal code yet. No 846 deposit code either. This morning WMR changed again. Now shows Tax Topic 151. Appeal rights. Reference code 1242. Anyone face this? Did it resolve? What does this mean?

I think I've seen this situation before. Tax Topic 151 usually means there's possibly some kind of discrepancy they're looking at, but since you just verified your identity, it might just be their systems catching up. In my experience, it can take about 9-14 days after verification for everything to fully process and update correctly. The 810 freeze code should eventually be reversed with an 811, but sometimes there's a delay between these steps.

•Thanks for the info. I've been waiting exactly 7 days since verification. Will give it another 7 days then. Seems like the 9-14 day timeframe is common based on what I've read elsewhere.

•Do you know if the reference code 1242 specifically indicates anything about the verification process? I'm trying to understand if this is normal progression or if there's another issue entirely.

•Think of this like a train moving through stations. You've passed the identity verification station, but now you're at the review station. The system often shows these interim codes while things are processing. It's like your return is in a waiting room before the doctor (IRS agent) gives final approval.

Have you checked if your transcript shows any Transaction Code 570 (additional account action pending)? Or perhaps a TC 971 with a specific notice number? Those would give us more clues about what's happening, wouldn't they? Sometimes the WMR tool shows these generic messages while the transcript contains the real details of what's going on behind the scenes.

I had almost the exact same situation last year. Verified my identity and then got that dreaded Tax Topic 151. I spent days trying to call the IRS regular number with no luck. Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes. The agent confirmed it was just their system updating after my verification and that I didn't need to do anything else. My 811 code appeared about a week later, followed by my refund. Might be worth getting confirmation from an agent so you're not stressing about it.

Tax Topic 151 with code 1242 means your return is under review. Not necessarily an audit. Just extra verification. Most people I know who got this after ID verification still got their refunds. Just took longer. Usually 2-3 weeks after verification. Check your account transcript daily. Look for 811 code.

I'm a bit skeptical that this is just "normal processing" after verification. Tax Topic 151 specifically mentions appeal rights, which suggests they've made some kind of determination or adjustment. Seems like there might be something else going on beyond just identity verification. Maybe they're questioning something on your return? 🤔 Not trying to worry you, but I've seen this pattern before and it wasn't always just a waiting game.

Actually, this is a known sequence with ID verification cases. The 151/1242 often appears temporarily after verification as their systems process the removal of the 810 freeze. Did you receive any other notices besides the 5747C? Was there anything unusual about your return this year compared to previous years?

•Fwiw I had the exact same thing happen in Feb. Got the 5747C, verified in person at TAC office, then got TT151 for like 10 days. Then everything updated at once - 811 code appeared and WMR changed to approved. DDD came 3 days later. It's def part of the normal process after verification.

•I've seen this pattern repeatedly with ID verification cases: • Initial 810 freeze code • Identity verification completed • Brief appearance of TT151/1242 • System update (usually 7-14 days) • 811 reversal code • 846 refund issued The key is that there's often this "in between" state where the system shows confusing or seemingly negative messages before fully updating.

I've seen worse situations than yours that still resolved favorably. Someone in my tax group had their return flagged for potential identity theft (not just verification), got multiple freeze codes, and still received their refund after 6 weeks. Compared to that, your situation seems to be following the normal post-verification pattern. The 151 code is concerning on its own, but in the context of a recent identity verification, it's often just part of the process. Just don't call the general IRS line - complete waste of time compared to the specialized departments.

I went through this exact scenario in 2023. The Tax Topic 151 with reference code 1242 after ID verification is actually more common than you'd think. What's happening is that your return is in a "limbo" state while their systems synchronize after removing the identity verification hold. The fact that your transcripts are showing all your credits is a really good sign - it means they've accepted your return details and just need to finish processing the verification removal. In my case, the 811 reversal code appeared exactly 10 days after I got the TT151 message, and my refund was direct deposited 3 days after that. The appeal rights language sounds scary, but it's just their generic message for any review situation. Keep checking your transcripts daily - that's where you'll see the real progress before WMR updates.

•This is really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the exact same thing! The 10-day timeline you mentioned matches what others have said about the 7-14 day window. I'm glad you mentioned checking transcripts daily - that seems to be the best way to track actual progress rather than relying on WMR updates. Did you notice any other interim codes on your transcript during those 10 days, or did it just stay the same until the 811 appeared?

•@Zara Khan This gives me so much hope! I m'currently at day 8 since verification and seeing Tax Topic 151, so your 10-day timeline has me feeling optimistic. Quick question - during those 10 days you waited, did you see any movement on your transcript or did everything just update all at once when the 811 code finally appeared? Also, did your WMR tool stay on Tax Topic 151 the entire time until it switched to approved? I m'trying to gauge if I should expect any intermediate updates or if it will just suddenly change one day.

•@Zara Khan Your experience is really helpful! I m'dealing with something similar right now - verified my identity 9 days ago and got the Tax Topic 151 yesterday. The timing you mentioned 10 (days for the 811 code gives) me hope that I m'almost through this process. One thing I m'curious about - when your 811 code finally appeared, did your WMR tool immediately update to show approved "status," or was there still a delay between the transcript updating and WMR catching up? I m'trying to manage my expectations about when I might actually see movement on the WMR tool versus just watching the transcripts.
