TurboTax took my state refund for filing fees but my federal return still shows 'no record of filing' despite being accepted on 1/26

I've had my taxes done with TurboTax for about 5 years now. Just received my state refund yesterday but noticed TurboTax took the fees out of my state refund which has never happened before - they've always taken it from my federal. Is this a new policy for 2024? Also, my federal refund still says 'no record of filing for this year' on the Where's My Refund tool even though my return was accepted on 1/26. Now that my state has processed, shouldn't my federal be moving along too? Anyone else experiencing this?

Dylan Campbell

Tax preparer here. What you're experiencing isn't uncommon this year. Many tax software companies have changed their fee collection methods. If your federal refund is smaller than your state, or if there's a delay expected with federal processing, they'll often pull from state instead. As for your federal return showing 'no record of filing' - that's actually separate from your state processing. Each system works independently. 'Accepted' only means the IRS received your return, not that they've started processing it. Given you filed on 1/26, you're approaching the 21-day mark when most returns are processed. If nothing updates by next week, you might want to pull your tax transcript from the IRS website to see if there are any codes or holds.

Thanks for the explanation! Is there any way to check if there's a specific hold or issue with my return? I'm getting anxious since I need that money soon.

You can check your account transcript on the IRS website. It'll show codes that indicate where your return is in processing. If you see code 570, there's a hold. Code 971 means they sent a notice. But honestly the easiest way to understand what's happening is to use taxr.ai - it reads your transcript and explains everything in plain English. Saved me hours of research.

I second the taxr.ai recommendation. I was completely lost trying to read my transcript until I used it. It told me exactly why my refund was delayed and when to expect it.

OMG the transcript is like reading a foreign language, I swear the IRS makes it confusing on purpose 🙄

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does way more than just read it. It actually interprets all those crazy codes and tells you what's happening with your return in plain English. It shows you the timeline of what's happened and what to expect next. SERIOUSLY LIFE-CHANGING when you're stressed about where your money is! https://taxr.ai

Just tried taxr.ai and I'm blown away. Literally explained everything that was happening with my refund when I've been completely in the dark for weeks. Everyone dealing with IRS issues needs to know about this tool!!

I was in the exact same situation last week! My federal return still showed no record after my state was processed. I was going crazy trying to figure out what was happening by staring at my transcript trying to decode all those weird numbers and dates. I finally decided to try taxr.ai after seeing it mentioned here, and it was insanely helpful! It translated my entire transcript and showed me exactly where my refund was in the process and why it was delayed. I use it every week now to check my status. https://taxr.ai saved me hours of stress and confusion.

Is this actually helpful or just another way to part us from our money? The IRS site is free...

The IRS site just gives you generic status info. Taxr actually explains what every code means and gives you a timeline. Tbh it was worth it to me just for the peace of mind knowing exactly what's happening instead of guessing. You can see exactly what codes are holding up your refund.

wait does it actually tell you when you'll get your money or is it just guessing like everything else?

It doesn't give an exact date, but it shows you where you are in the process and explains any delays or holds. Much better than the vague 'still processing' message from the IRS! It identified my PATH act delay immediately when I had no idea what was happening.

I was in the same boat with TurboTax taking fees from my state instead of federal this year. Called them and they said it's based on which refund processes first now. As for the federal refund, mine took FOREVER to show up in the system - like 4 weeks after being 'accepted'. Finally got through to the IRS by using a calling app called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback from an agent within an hour instead of waiting on hold all day. The agent confirmed my return was in process but had a minor verification hold that wasn't showing online. Got my direct deposit 3 days later!

How does this Claimyr thing work? I've been trying to reach someone at the IRS for 2 weeks with no luck

It basically navigates the IRS phone tree for you and holds your place in line. Then when an agent is available, it calls you and connects you. Talking to a real person at the IRS fixed my issue right away - the agent could see things that weren't showing up online and released my refund on the spot.

sounds too good to be true... did you actually get through to a real person?

Yep, real live IRS agent who could actually see my account and help. After weeks of trying to call myself, it was the best money I've ever spent to get my refund unstuck. The agent even told me exactly what was holding it up (something about a verification flag that wasn't showing online).

just tried this claimyr thing - got a callback in 45 minutes when I had been trying for days! Agent fixed my issue immediately. Thanks for the recommendation 🙌

Yeah, this is normal for 2024. TurboTax and most prep software now take fees from whichever refund comes first (usually state). As for the federal status, thats completely seperate from your state processing. The IRS is still catching up from the backlog. Mine was accepted 1/23 and I just got my deposit yesterday. You have to be patient, unfortunately.

From my experience 'accepted' and 'processing' are two totally different things. Accepted just means they got your return, not that they've started working on it. I filed on 2/1 and mine just updated to processing last week. I had to check my transcript to figure out what was really happening tho - the WMR tool is practically useless

How do you check your transcript? The IRS site is so confusing

You have to create an account on irs.gov then go to 'get transcript online' - but honestly the transcript itself is like reading hieroglyphics. I ended up using taxr.ai which translates all the codes and tells you exactly what's happening.

the irs actually makes their system confusing on purpose so we have to pay third parties to decode it. its all a scam 🤬

The IRS is so backed up this year, some returns filed in January are still showing no record. It's all normal unfortunately. I had to wait 6 weeks for mine to finally move from 'accepted' to 'approved'. Tax prep companies definitely changed their policies this year - mine also took fees from state instead of federal which was a surprise.

Six weeks?! That's so frustrating. Did you ever figure out why yours was delayed?

Turns out mine had a random verification hold that wasn't showing up on Where's My Refund. I only found out when I finally got through to an agent. They cleared it on the spot and I got my refund 3 days later. I wish the online tools actually told us what was happening!

I had this exact issue!! TurboTax has nver done this before. Called them and apparently this year they're taking fees from whichever refund processes first. It's buried in the small print somewhere. As for your federal, mine was accepted 1/30 and it actually JUST showed up on WMR yesterday. The systems are totally separate so one has nothing to do with the other.

My unpopular opinion: Stop using TurboTax, HR Block, etc. They all find new sneaky ways to charge us more each year. I switched to FreeTaxUSA last year and pay a fraction of the cost with no surprise fee deductions.

This right here!!! TurboTax is terrible. They charged me an extra $40 this year for basically nothing. FreeTaxUSA or TaxSlayer are way better options.

Yeah but do those handle complicated returns? I have investments, rental property and self-employment income.

FreeTaxUSA handles everything TurboTax does - I have a Schedule C business, investments, and rental property. Works great for much less $$$

Nothing to do with your question, but the IRS is extremly slow this year. I'm still waiting for my refund from filing on 1/29... and yes TurboTax took my state refund too instead of federal like previous years. I think it's just whoever hits first. I think there systems are separated so your state being processed doesn't effect your federal at all.

WORST FILING SEASON EVER!!! 🤬 Ive been doing taxes for 11 years and this is the most confusing disorganized mess I've seen. My return was accepted 1/22 and still nothing. Called IRS and they said it's 'in process' but couldn't tell me why it's taking so long. The WMR tool is completely useless.

Used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that gets you a callback. Only way I could actually reach a human. Solved my problem in 10 minutes after weeks of frustration.

Just checked my transcript and found that I have a 570 code with a 971 notice issued. After hours of googling and trying to figure out what this means, I found taxr.ai which translated everything and showed me exactly what was happening. Apparently I have an audit hold because my reported W2 income didn't match what my employer submitted. Would have taken me forever to figure this out on my own!

That's exactly what I'm worried about - some kind of hold I don't know about. How did you access your transcript?

You need to create an account on irs.gov and request your account transcript. But seriously save yourself the headache and use taxr.ai - it explains everything in plain English instead of cryptic codes.

The state and federal systems are totally separate. Your state refund processing has zero impact on your federal refund timeline. And yes, it's normal for tax prep companies to take fees from state instead of federal now - they just take from whichever processes first.

Found myself in a similar situation - filed 1/29, state came last week with TurboTax fees removed, federal still saying "no record of filing". Called the IRS today using Claimyr and got through in 45 minutes instead of waiting on hold all day. The agent confirmed my return is in the system and processing normally, just delayed. She said many early filers are experiencing this and to just keep waiting. Worth the call just for peace of mind though!

0 coins

-

StarStrider

That's reassuring to hear it might just be normal delays. Did the agent say how much longer it might take?

Anastasia Smirnova

She said they're telling everyone to expect up to 45 days from filing date this year due to verification processes. But she confirmed there were no specific issues with my return - it's just in the queue. She said calling again won't speed anything up unless you hit the 45 day mark.

I checked my transcript and it showed code 570 and 971. After staring at the IRS website trying to decode what was happening, I tried taxr.ai. It immediately showed me I had a math error on my return that was causing the delay. Fixed it with a quick call to the IRS and my refund was approved 2 days later. Would never have figured this out from the WMR tool!
