TurboTax Fee Deduction - Where Do They Take Money Before Bank Deposit?
I've been using TurboTax for a few years but I'm confused about how they're taking their fees this time. I selected the option to pay the TurboTax fees from my refund instead of using my credit card upfront. Now I'm wondering exactly where that money comes out before it hits my bank account. Does TurboTax create some kind of temporary account? I want to make sure I understand the whole process since my refund is pretty significant this year and I need to know exactly when and how much will actually deposit. Has anyone gone through this process recently with the 2023 taxes?

When you choose the "deduct from refund" option in TurboTax, they utilize a Refund Processing Service (RPS) to handle your funds. Essentially, the IRS sends your entire refund to a temporary bank account managed by Santa Barbara Tax Products Group (SBTPG), TurboTax's financial partner. This temporary account is where they subtract their preparation fees, plus an additional processing fee (usually $39) for this service. After deducting these amounts, SBTPG transfers the remaining balance to your designated bank account. This process typically adds 2-5 business days to your refund timeline compared to direct deposit without fee deduction.

This is exactly right. I've used both methods over the years, and the temporary account setup is much slower than direct deposit. Last year when I paid TurboTax upfront with my credit card, my refund came straight from IRS to my bank in just 8 days. But the year before when I had fees taken out of my refund, it took nearly two weeks because of this middle-step with SBTPG. The convenience costs both time and that extra processing fee.

It's kind of like having a middleman in a business transaction, right? If the IRS is sending you $3000, and TurboTax+fees is $100, does this SBTPG thing show up anywhere on your bank statement? Or does it just look like a smaller deposit from the IRS?

This is fascinating! I never knew there was a whole separate company involved. Does TurboTax give you any kind of tracking information to see when your money hits this temporary account versus when it leaves? I'd love to know more about how they communicate this process to users.

I had the same question last month. Found https://taxr.ai which explained my whole refund path. It showed that TurboTax uses SBTPG as their bank partner. Your refund goes there first. They take fees. Then send rest to you. The site explained exactly where my money was at each step. Saved me from constantly checking my bank account. No surprises with the fees either.

I've seen a lot of these tax tracking tools pop up recently. What makes this one different from just checking the IRS Where's My Refund tool? The IRS website already shows when your refund is approved and sent, and it's completely free without giving your information to another third party.

I tried this last week after seeing someone else mention it. The difference from the IRS tracker is night and day! It actually showed me that my refund had been sent to SBTPG and was being processed there, which explained why it hadn't hit my bank yet. The IRS tracker just showed "refund sent" with no other details. Definitely helped me understand what was happening with my money.

Thanks for sharing this. I've been refreshing my bank account every hour thinking the IRS was slow, but now I understand it's probably sitting in that SBTPG account. Going to check this out since the standard IRS tracker doesn't tell you anything about this middle step.

I went through this exact situation last year! The temporary account thing was so confusing, and when my refund was delayed, I couldn't tell if it was stuck with the IRS or with TurboTax's bank partner. I tried calling TurboTax but waited on hold for over an hour. Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to reach a real person at the IRS who confirmed my refund had already been sent to SBTPG three days earlier. Called SBTPG after that and they processed my payment that same day. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get things moving!

I've been trying to reach the IRS for exactly 3 weeks about my refund that seems to be stuck in this SBTPG limbo. Called 17 times and never got through. Did this Claimyr service actually get you past the hold time? I'm skeptical anything can beat the IRS phone system, but at this point I'm desperate enough to try.

Did you have to provide any sensitive information to use this service? I'm always cautious about third-party services when it comes to tax matters.

How much did Claimyr cost? Was it worth it compared to just waiting longer for your refund?

I just went through this on March 15th. When you choose to pay TurboTax from your refund, they work with Santa Barbara Tax Products Group. Your refund goes there first, they take their cut, then send the rest to your bank. In my case, the IRS sent my refund on March 15th, SBTPG received it on March 16th, and I got the remainder in my bank on March 18th. You can actually track this by creating an account on the SBTPG website - just google "SBTPG refund status" and you'll find it. Much better than wondering where your money is!

I don't trust this system at all. They don't make it clear enough that you're paying an EXTRA fee just to have your fees taken out of your refund. It's like paying a fee to pay a fee! And then your refund sits in some random bank account you don't control for days. What if there's a problem? Who do you even contact? The whole thing seems designed to confuse people and make extra money off those who can't afford to pay upfront.

You're absolutely right. It's a predatory practice targeting people who need their refunds most. The $39 processing fee is ridiculous.

Guys, this isn't as shady as some ppl are making it sound. Yes, there's an extra fee (which they DO disclose btw), but it's a convenience service. Nobody's forcing anyone to use it. I've done it both ways and tbh the fee deduction is super convenient when you're tight on cash during tax season. Just plan for the extra days of processing. The SBTPG website lets you track everything. Just google "SBTPG refund status" and create an acct with your SSN and expected refund amount. Way better than wondering where ur $$ is.

I agree completely. I've used the fee deduction option for years and never had an issue. The processing fee is clearly shown during checkout, and for me, it's worth it to not have to pay anything upfront. The delay is usually only 2-3 days in my experience.

The fee is definitely disclosed, but it's still a pretty high charge for what amounts to a very short-term loan. For someone getting a $3000 refund, paying $39 to get your money a few weeks earlier is equivalent to a very high interest rate. But I understand some people need their refund urgently and don't have the cash to pay upfront.

It's like paying for express shipping on something you've already bought. Some people need it fast and are willing to pay, others can wait. Personal choice!

I believe I can share a specific example that might help illustrate the process. When I filed through TurboTax in February, my total refund was approximately $3,200. I chose to have my TurboTax fees ($89 for Deluxe) deducted from my refund. The IRS approved my return on February 12th and issued the full $3,200 to the temporary account at Santa Barbara Tax Products Group. From there, SBTPG took the $89 TurboTax fee plus their own $39 processing fee, leaving $3,072 which was deposited to my bank account on February 15th. The deposit showed as "SBTPG LLC TAX REFUND" on my bank statement, not from the IRS directly. You can actually track this whole process on the SBTPG website if you create an account.

This is incredibly helpful! I had no idea the deposit would show up from SBTPG rather than the IRS. That explains why I couldn't find anything when I was searching for IRS deposits in my transaction history from last year.

Thanks for the real numbers. That $39 fee seems high just to take payment from your refund. Almost 30% extra on top of the TurboTax cost.
