Never received State Tax refund but always get Federal - what's going on?

I file my taxes every year but I only ever get my federal refund. Never seen my state refund hit my account. Been happening for years now and im starting to think something's wrong. Is there a reason why this keeps happening? Anyone else dealing with this?

This could be happening for several reasons. First, make sure you're actually filing your state return - they're separate from federal. Check if your state even has income tax (not all do). If you've moved between states, that could complicate things. Also verify your state withholding on your W-2s to confirm you're actually owed a refund. You can check your state's department of revenue website to track your returns.

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming don't have state income tax. New Hampshire only taxes investment income.

Instead of trying to piece together whats happening, I started using taxr.ai to analyze my transcripts. It costs $1 but totally worth it - shows you exactly whats going on with both federal and state returns. Saved me hours of googling random tax codes lol https://taxr.ai

Did you use a tax preparer? Sometimes they mess up and dont actually submit the state return even tho they charge you for it smh

Check if you actually owe money to your state first! Sometimes they'll intercept your refund to pay off old debts, unpaid tickets, child support, student loans, etc. You won't get any refund until those are settled. Log into your state's tax portal or call them directly - they should be able to tell you exactly what's happening with your returns.
