Refund Stuck in Errors Department - 4 Weeks In and Now Told to Wait 10 Weeks
Welp looks like I have to wait the 10wks 🤦🏾♀️ I spoke to someone and she said my refund is with the errors department. I have never had to wait this long for what belongs to me smh, I'm already 4 weeks in.

Unfortunately, that's pretty standard when your return gets flagged for the errors department. The 10 week timeframe is their standard response, though sometimes it resolves faster. Did they tell you what specific error triggered the review?

Nope! That's the most frustrating part. She just said it was flagged for "review" but couldn't tell me why. I claimed the same credits I do every year, nothing new or different. Just need my money for bills coming up 😩

Same thing happened to me last year. They told me 10 weeks but it actually took 12! The IRS is seriously understaffed. I ended up using Claimyr.com to get through to an agent who could actually tell me what was going on. Regular number had me on hold for 3+ hours before disconnecting. With Claimyr I got through in like 15 minutes and found out they were missing a document from my employer. Once I faxed that in, I got my refund within 2 weeks.

•That's actually really helpful, thank you! Did you have to pay a lot for that service? I'm desperate at this point, especially if I could find out what's actually wrong instead of just waiting blindly.

•It was worth every penny because I was able to fix the actual problem rather than just waiting. I think it was around $25-30? Way better than wasting hours on hold or waiting 3 months for my money. Here's their link if you want to check: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

The errors department is basically a black hole. I've been through this twice. First time took 8 weeks, second time took 6. The most annoying part is they often don't actually need anything from you - they're just reviewing something internally. Check your transcript if you can - it might give more info than the phone rep did.

I'd recommend checking your tax transcript online. It often shows codes that explain what's happening that the phone reps don't tell you. I was in errors for weeks until I checked my transcript and saw they were verifying my W-2 info. I used taxr.ai to decode my transcript and it explained everything - told me exactly what was happening and gave me a timeline. Way more helpful than the vague "wait 10 weeks" from the IRS.

•I keep seeing taxr.ai mentioned here. Is it actually legit? I'm always suspicious of tax services that aren't directly from the IRS.

•It doesn't file your taxes or anything - it just helps you understand what's on your transcript. The IRS transcripts are full of codes like 570, 971, 846 that most people don't understand. Taxr.ai just explains what they mean for your specific situation. I found it super helpful when I was stuck in limbo like OP.

Pro tip: If you do end up waiting the full 10 weeks, you'll likely get interest added to your refund. Small consolation, but at least it's something. Current IRS interest rate is 7% annually, which is better than most savings accounts.

Did you file with a tax preparer or software? Sometimes they can provide insight on common errors that might have triggered the review. Also check if you have any past due debts that might cause an offset - that sometimes triggers additional review.

•I used TurboTax like I do every year. No debts that I know of! My return is pretty simple - W2, child tax credit, nothing fancy. That's why I'm so confused about what could possibly be wrong.

•Could be identity verification then. The IRS has been extra cautious with Child Tax Credit claims the last two years. Might be worth calling specifically about ID verification - sometimes that's handled by a different department.
