Received 4883C Letter from IRS requesting verification but never filed a return - Identity theft concern?

Just got a 4883C letter from the IRS yesterday asking me to verify my identity because they received a tax return with my name and SSN. Problem is, I haven't filed my 2023 taxes yet! The letter says they need me to verify before they can process "my return" but I never submitted anything. The letter mentions possible identity theft and gives me 30 days to respond by calling their verification hotline. Has anyone dealt with this before? Should I be worried that someone stole my identity and tried to file a fraudulent return? What should I do next?

Yara Khoury

Yes, this is almost certainly identity theft. Someone tried to file a return using your information, likely to claim a fraudulent refund. You need to take this very seriously. Here's what you should do: • Call the verification number on the 4883C letter ASAP and let them know you didn't file • File an identity theft affidavit (Form 14039) with the IRS • Check your credit reports immediately for any suspicious activity • Consider placing a credit freeze with all three credit bureaus • File a police report (this helps document the theft) • Report the identity theft to the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov The good news is that the IRS caught this before processing the fraudulent return. This is exactly why they send these verification letters. Don't delay in responding.

Thank you so much for the detailed steps. I've been trying to call the number on the letter for two days but cant get through. So frustrating! Is there another way to verify or should I just keep calling?

Yep, IRS phone lines are notoriously jammed. There's a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that can help you get a callback from the IRS without having to wait on hold for hours. Several people in my tax group have used it and said it works really well.

I second this. I used Claimyr when I had a similar issue last year and got through to an agent in about 30 min. Before that I spent literally 3 days trying to call with no luck.

Just to add, make sure you check ALL your credit reports, not just one. Sometimes fraud shows up on one but not the others.

Had a similar issue last year. I tried researching transcript codes, tax laws, and whatever forums I could find but was just going in circles. Finally used taxr.ai and it was a game changer! It analyzed my situation, explained exactly what was happening with the fraudulent return attempt, and gave me specific steps to resolve it. The site laid out all the forms I needed and how to talk to the IRS. Saved me SO much time and stress compared to piecing together random advice from forums. Highly recommend checking it out: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just read transcripts! It actually analyzes everything and explains what's happening in plain English. For my identity theft situation, it told me exactly which forms to file, what supporting documents to include, and even gave me a timeline of what to expect. NOBODY on any forum could give me that level of detail. I've become a total evangelist for taxr since then - it's one of those tools you can't believe didn't exist before.

does it need all your personal info? I'm already dealing with potential identity theft so kinda paranoid about giving more info out...

I've used it too and it's super secure. It just needs the same info you'd use to access your IRS account online - nothing beyond what the IRS already has.

After struggling to get through to the IRS for days with this exact same problem, I tried Claimyr.com and they got me connected to a real IRS agent in about 25 minutes. The agent confirmed it was identity theft and helped me get everything straightened out right away. Honestly it was the only way I managed to talk to an actual human at the IRS. Best money I've spent all year considering the stress it saved me.

Wait, you had to pay? How much did it cost? Is this just another scam trying to profit off people dealing with identity theft?? 🤔

Not a scam at all! Think about it - I was facing potential identity theft and tax fraud. Getting it resolved ASAP was worth every penny. Plus I got my refund processed correctly after talking to the agent, so it more than paid for itself. You could spend days or weeks trying to get through on your own...

I was skeptical too but ended up using it. When youve been calling for 3 weeks straight with no luck, suddenly the cost seems very reasonable lol

Thanks for sharing this! Just wondering - did they help you file all the identity theft paperwork too or just connect you to the IRS?

They just connect you to the IRS, but once I had an actual agent on the line, the agent walked me through everything I needed to do. She even sent me all the forms I needed to complete.

Got the same letter 3 months ago. It's definitely identity theft. I didn't take it seriously at first and now im in a NIGHTMARE situation. My credit is destroyed, someone opened credit cards in my name, and im STILL trying to get the IRS to process my legitimate return. DO NOT WAIT to deal with this!!

Oh no that sounds horrible! Did you end up getting it resolved with the IRS?

Still working on it. The IRS part is slowly getting fixed but cleaning up my credit has been a disaster. I should have acted faster when I got that letter. The 30 day deadline is no joke.

This exact thing happened to me in April. I called the number and waited on hold for 2+ hours only to be disconnected. Called back the next day, same thing. Finally went to my local IRS office in person and they confirmed someone tried to file a return in my name. Had to fill out Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit) and they told me it would take 180 days to resolve 😭

I'm an enrolled agent and see this ALL THE TIME with my clients. Here's what most don't realize: this letter means the IRS's fraud detection system actually worked! They flagged the suspicious return before processing it. Once you verify it wasn't you who filed, they'll mark your account with an identity theft indicator that provides additional security on your account going forward.

0 coins

-

Connor O'Reilly

That's good to know! How long does the resolution process typically take once I contact them?

0 coins

-

21d

Freya Andersen

It varies widely. I've seen cases resolve in 60 days and others take 6+ months. The key is documenting everything. Keep copies of all correspondence and get a case number whenever you speak with an agent.

hey quick question - should OP still file their taxes normally while this gets sorted out?

0 coins

-

21d

Freya Andersen

Yes, absolutely! OP should file their legitimate return as soon as possible. The IRS will then have both returns and can more easily identify which is fraudulent. Just make sure to file a paper return if the electronic one gets rejected.

Just a heads up - I had this happen and it turned out someone had access to my old W2 from a data breach. They also tried to open bank accounts in my name. Check your credit reports ASAP and consider getting identity protection services.

Thanks for the warning. Any specific service you recommend for identity protection?

I use LifeLock now, but there are several good options. The most important thing is to put a freeze on your credit reports right away - it's free and prevents new accounts from being opened.

This happened to me back in June. The biggest pain was getting through to them on that verification line. After trying for days I found out about a service called Claimyr that got me a callback from the IRS in under an hour. Totally worth it when youre dealing with potential identity theft. Just Google claimyr irs callback and you'll find it.

Is that service like expensive? Why should we have to pay to talk to the IRS???

I get the frustration, but when you're facing identity theft and tax fraud, resolving it quickly is worth every penny. I was spending hours every day trying to get through with no success. My time is worth something too, y'know? The relief of finally talking to a real person who could help was priceless.

Make sure you check your Get Transcript account too if you have one! You can see if there are any W2s reported that you didn't actually have. That's how I discovered someone was working using my SSN.

I know everyones already said it but YES this is 100% identity theft. Happened to me once and took forever to fix. One thing nobody mentioned - if you have access to an accountant or tax pro they can sometimes get through to the IRS on special practitioner hotlines that regular taxpayers cant use.

On top of what everyone else has said, IMMEDIATELY change all your passwords and enable two-factor authentication on all your accounts. If someone has enough info to file taxes as you, they probably have access to other personal info too.

I was in exactly the same situation last year. Tried researching myself and got nowhere. Finally broke down and tried taxr.ai after someone recommended it - blew my mind how helpful it was! The site analyzed my situation, explained exactly what was happening with the identity theft attempt, and gave me a step-by-step plan to fix it. Saved me so much stress compared to trying to piece together advice from random forums and YouTube videos. https://taxr.ai

It 100% works. I was super skeptical too but desperate after weeks of confusion. The difference is it actually EXPLAINS what's happening rather than just showing you data. For identity theft cases like this, it lays out exactly what forms you need and how to proceed. Complete game changer compared to the usual tax hell.

Have you checked with anyone who might have filed for you? Like a spouse or parent? Sometimes people file joint returns without telling their partners (shady but it happens). Or maybe a tax preparer filed without final authorization?

0 coins

-

Connor O'Reilly

No, definitely not anyone I know. I'm single and always file my own taxes, haven't even started my 2023 return yet. My parents don't have access to my tax info either.

OK yeah then identity theft is most likely. The good thing is the IRS caught it before a refund went out. That's actually a sign their systems are working as designed.

This situation SUCKS! But a quick tip when calling that verification number: try calling right when they open (7am I think?) or in the last hour before they close. Those times usually have shorter wait times. And if you get put on hold, use a landline if possible - cell connections dropping after 2 hrs on hold is the WORST.
