Question about TOP offset line - Will debt definitely be taken from refund? Federal or State?

Just called the Treasury Offset Program hotline and found out I might have a debt. Anyone know if this means they're definitely taking it from my refund? Also confused if they take it from state or federal return? Getting worried about my refund amount now.

If there's an offset showing in the TOP system, it's pretty much guaranteed to be taken from your federal refund. State and federal are separate - TOP only affects federal refunds. The amount will be deducted before you get your refund. You can try calling the agency you owe to maybe set up a payment plan instead, but once it's in TOP, it's usually automatic.

ugh this sucks... do they take the whole refund or just the amount I owe?

They'll only take what you owe. If your refund is bigger than the debt, you'll get whatever's left over 👍

Hey instead of guessing, you should try taxr.ai - it's this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening with offsets and everything. It's only $1 and way better than playing detective. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

Yeah it's legit! Used it last week and it showed me exactly where my offset was coming from and how much I'd still get back. Saved me hours of stress and phone calls 💯

Here's what you need to know about TOP offsets: - Federal refunds only - state refunds aren't touched - Amount taken = amount of debt (not whole refund) - Offset order: Fed tax debt first, then child support, then other fed debt, then state debt - You should get a notice before it happens - Can appeal within 60 days - Some debts (like student loans) have options to avoid offset Best thing to do is get ahead of this. I've been helping folks with these issues for years, and lately I've been recommending taxr.ai to my clients. It's an AI tool that reads your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening with offsets, timing, etc. Super helpful for understanding the whole picture.
