Tax Refund with Offset Notice - Anyone Still Get Their Remaining Refund?

Hey everyone, I'm kind of stressing out here. I checked the Treasury Offset Program website (https://fiscal.treasury.gov/top/) and found out I have an offset for some old student loans. According to the Where's My Refund tool, my return is being processed, but I'm not sure what happens next? Does anyone know if I'll still get whatever's left after the offset? I've been searching through IRS FAQs but can't find a clear answer for my situation. This is my first time filing in the US so I'm really confused about the whole process. 😕

Yes, you'll definitely still receive whatever portion of your refund remains after the offset amount is taken. I had this happen last year with child support arrears. The process usually works like this: the IRS processes your return and approves your refund, then before sending it to you, they check with the Treasury Offset Program. If there's a match, they'll take the amount owed (or up to your total refund if it's less than what you owe), and then send you any remaining balance. In my experience, it added about 2-3 weeks to the processing time compared to previous years.

Would you know if they send any kind of notification about exactly how much was taken for the offset? My refund is supposed to be around $3,200 but I think I owe about $1,800 in old student loans. Just trying to plan my finances accordingly.

Not the original commenter, but I went through this exact scenario last year. You'll get a letter from Treasury (not the IRS) about 7-10 days AFTER they've already processed the offset explaining exactly how much was taken and where it went. Kind of a "we already did this, FYI" situation 😂. The remaining amount just showed up in my account with no explanation of the reduced amount. Made for an interesting conversation with my wife when only half the expected refund appeared!

Been thru this 2x w/ student loans. Super frustrating when ur counting on that $$. I started using https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript once it updated. Shows exactly what codes mean & when the remaining refund will hit ur acct. Saved me tons of anxiety last yr when half my refund got taken. At least I knew exactly when the rest was coming so I could budget. Their transcript analyzer showed me the exact offset amt before I got the official letter.

I was in your exact position in 2022. Had a $4,700 refund and $3,200 went to my student loans. I tried calling the IRS to confirm I'd get the rest but spent DAYS trying to reach someone. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes. They confirmed the remaining amount was being processed and gave me the exact timeline. Saved me so much stress! The agent even explained how to set up a payment plan for the remaining loan balance so I wouldn't have future offsets.

Is this service really necessary though? Couldn't you just wait for the Treasury letter? Not sure about paying for something when the information will come eventually. How much does it cost?

I believe the service doesn't charge unless they successfully connect you with an IRS agent. When you're waiting on thousands of dollars and need to plan your finances, sometimes waiting weeks for a letter isn't practical. Especially if you need to make arrangements before the next tax season.

Thanks for mentioning this! I'm checking it out right now. The IRS website says wait times are 45+ minutes and I've already tried calling twice with no luck. I need to know what's happening with my money ASAP since I have rent coming up. Already bookmarked the link.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet - make sure you're checking your mail regularly. The Bureau of Fiscal Service (not the IRS) will send you a notice explaining the offset. Don't throw away any official-looking mail! Also, have you checked if you qualify for any student loan forgiveness programs? Might be worth looking into to prevent this from happening again next year.

Is anyone else skeptical about these offset situations? I've heard stories where people had offsets for debts they'd already paid or that weren't even theirs. Shouldn't there be a better verification process before they just take your money? And why does it take so long to get the remaining refund when they can take the offset amount immediately?

OMG I was so worried about this same thing last month!! My offset was for old state taxes I didn't even know I owed! 😱 But I can confirm that YES, you absolutely do get whatever is left over after they take the offset amount. Mine took exactly 17 days from when my WMR status changed to "refund approved" until I got the remaining amount in my bank account. The waiting was awful but it did come through! Keep checking your bank account and be patient! 💕
