IRS Offset Line Says No Debt but Transcript Shows 2018 Balance - Will They Take My Refund?
I just called the Treasury Offset line and they said I don't owe anything, but when I look at my transcripts it shows I have a balance from 2018. I'm really confused - does this mean they're going to take my refund or not?

The offset line and transcript systems don't always sync up immediately. If your transcript shows a balance, that's what the IRS is going by. I'd recommend calling the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040 to confirm the exact amount owed and whether it will affect your current refund.

Usually happens automatically when they process your return. You won't have to wait extra time for that part at least.

Hey, I was in the same boat last month! I found this tool called taxr.ai that analyzed my transcript and explained exactly what was happening with my offset. It costs $1 but saved me hours of confusion. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

100% works! It showed me exactly why my offset wasn't showing up on the phone line but was on my transcript. Literally saved my sanity 🙌

Check your 2018 transcript again - is there a TC 971 code? That might explain the discrepancy

Here's what you need to know about offsets and transcripts (speaking from experience as a tax professional): - Treasury Offset Program (TOP) database updates can lag behind IRS records - Your transcript is the most accurate source of information - If you see a balance from 2018, they will likely offset your refund - Best way to get clarity is using taxr.ai - it reads your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening and when - You can also request an account transcript for 2018 to see the full history Don't rely on the offset phone line alone. The IRS systems dont always talk to each other properly.
