My tax refund was sent to a closed bank account - what happens now?
I just found out my tax refund of about $1,200 got sent to a bank account I closed last year. I'm kicking myself because I completely forgot to update my banking info when I filed. I tried calling the IRS refund hotline multiple times but keep getting disconnected because of "high call volume" (of course). Does anyone know what happens next? Will the IRS automatically try to send me a paper check once they find out the account is closed? Or do I need to somehow contact them to tell them about the closed account? I'm really stressed about this money - it's a significant amount for me right now. I'm also wondering if updating my bank info for next year's taxes will somehow help with this situation? Like if I file my 2024 taxes with my new bank account, will they automatically use that for my missing 2023 refund?
