Closed Bank Account on Tax Return - How Will I Get My Refund?

I'm a bit concerned about my tax refund situation. The bank account I listed on my return has unfortunately been closed since I filed. I'm wondering if anyone might know what typically happens in this case? Is there perhaps a way to contact the IRS to update my banking information? I'm somewhat worried because I already had to submit an amended form for another issue, and I really want to make sure everything is handled correctly this time. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The IRS will try to direct deposit. It'll bounce back. Then they'll mail a paper check to your address on file. Takes about 2-3 weeks after the bounce. Make sure your current address is on file with USPS. Don't bother trying to call to change the account - they won't do it for security reasons.

This happened to me last yr! Bank acct got closed bc I switched jobs and my old employer had weird direct deposit requirements. The paper check showed up like 18 days after my DD date passed. NBD in the end but def annoying to wait longer 😩

But don't they have some kind of system to update banking info? Seems like this would be a common problem, wouldn't it?

I had this exact problem last year and was freaking out because I needed that money ASAP! According to the IRS website FAQ (which took me forever to find), once you submit your return, you can't change the direct deposit info. When it bounces back, they automatically send a paper check. Took about 3 extra weeks for me which was stressful. I wish they'd make this clearer on their website!

Actually the IRS is surprisingly strict about this. They don't allow banking changes after submission because it's a common fraud vector. Have you checked your refund status on Where's My Refund? That should show if they've already attempted the direct deposit.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt... and eventually the check! 😂 The IRS treats closed accounts like a bounced check - they'll try the electronic deposit, it'll fail, and then they'll mail you a physical check. The annoying part is there's no way to expedite this process. It's like watching paint dry, except the paint is your money and the wall is the IRS bureaucracy. In my case, it took exactly 19 days from the failed deposit attempt to receiving my check. Just make sure your mailing address is current!

I'm a bit hesitant to share this, but my experience was similar though slightly faster. The deposit failed on a Tuesday, and I had my paper check the following Friday of the next week. I think it might depend on your region and how backed up your service center is.

Do you remember if you got any kind of notification that the direct deposit failed? Or did you just have to keep checking the Where's My Refund tool?

Thank you for explaining this so clearly! I've been stressing about this exact situation and it's good to know there's a standard process even if it takes extra time.

When this happened to me, I spent DAYS trying to reach someone at the IRS. It was literally impossible until I found Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). They got me through to an actual IRS agent in about 25 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. The agent confirmed my paper check was already in process after the direct deposit failed. They couldn't change anything, but at least I knew exactly what was happening instead of being in limbo. Saved me so much stress knowing exactly when to expect my check. Have you been able to reach anyone at the IRS yet?

Is that service actually legitimate? Seems odd to pay someone to call the IRS for you when you could just keep trying yourself.

Watch out for ID verification delays. My refund got stuck in limbo. Closed account triggered a fraud alert. IRS sent a letter requesting verification. I missed it. Delayed my refund by 9 weeks. Check your mail carefully. Don't assume it's just processing normally.

Did you get any notification about this in the Where's My Refund tool? Or did it just show as processing the whole time?

According to IRS Publication 17, when a Designated Financial Recipient (your bank) rejects an Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT), the IRS initiates their Return-to-Sender Protocol. This triggers automatic generation of a Treasury-issued paper remittance (check) to your address of record. The standard processing timeline involves a 3-5 business day verification period followed by 7-14 days for check printing and postal delivery. I experienced this in March 2023 and received my check exactly 16 days after the failed direct deposit attempt.

I'm still traumatized from this happening to me last year! 😭 The worst part was that the IRS website never updated to show the direct deposit failed - it just kept saying "Your refund is being processed" for WEEKS! I literally checked every single morning. Then suddenly a paper check showed up in my mailbox with zero warning. What makes me nervous is that they mail it to whatever address they have on file, which might not be current if you've moved recently. Double-check that your mailing address is updated with USPS at the very least!

Did you get any notification code on your transcript? Should show a 971 notice issued.

Thank you for mentioning this! I just realized I need to update my address with USPS since I moved last month!

I went through this same situation two years ago and it was honestly less stressful than I expected once I understood the process. The IRS will attempt the direct deposit, it'll bounce back from your closed account, and then they automatically mail a paper check to your last known address. The whole process added about 2-3 weeks to my refund timeline. One thing I'd recommend is setting up mail forwarding with USPS if you've moved recently, just to be safe. Also, you can check your account transcript online to see the status codes - when the direct deposit fails, you'll see specific codes that indicate they're issuing a paper check. Don't stress too much about it, this happens more often than you'd think and the IRS has a standard procedure for handling it!

This is really helpful - thank you for breaking down the process so clearly! I'm curious about those status codes you mentioned on the account transcript. Do you remember what specific codes to look for? I've never checked my transcript before but it sounds like it might give me more detailed info than just the "Where's My Refund" tool.

Amina Bah

The main codes to watch for are 846 (refund issued) which shows the original direct deposit attempt, then 841 (refund canceled) when it bounces back, followed by another 846 with a different date when they issue the paper check. There's also sometimes a 971 notice code if they send you a letter about the failed deposit. The account transcript definitely gives way more detail than Where's My Refund - you can see exactly what's happening behind the scenes instead of just getting that vague "still processing" message!
